Mother's Day is one of the most special days of the year. We all have one thing in common, no matter where we come from, we all have a mother. Mother's of course come in different terms, such as a God Mother, or Grand Mother, or even a Foster Mother, but all in the same, they look out for us, love us, and understand us all the year long. This Mother's Day, why not surprise her, not only with lovely gifts, but by showing her you care, by doing something out of the ordinary.
You don't have to leap tall buildings, or learn to fly, to make your mother proud. Mom's have a way of being proud of you for even the smallest things, that no one else would notice.
I put together a list of suggestions on how you can surprise your mom this Mother's Day, and hopefully some of them will be of interest to you.
#20 Clean your room.
Take some time out on Mother's Day weekend, and clean your room. Make it sparkle, and take time to do the little things around the house that need some doing. Like piling up the newspapers and taking them out of the house. Like getting dad involved and cleaning up the garage, or making a space for mom's crafts in that corner you've been meaning to offer her. Surprise her with a spick and span house, clean enough for company.
#19 Plant mom a garden.
Get dad or someone to take you out to the local garden shop and see what seedlings they have blooming for spring. You can get creative, if you don't have a garage, and put them in pots, and mom can pick where she wants them to go, or you can If you go to a floral shop, see what they have in perennials, one year I got my mom a folk-art style wheel barrel that was filled with blooming flowers to the brim-it was hard sneaking it in, but she was thrilled to have blooming flowers all summer.
#18. Hamper Treat.
Surprise mom with a hamper of her favourite treats. Collect all of her favourite treats, her favourite chocolate, crackers and cheese, jams, wine, and put it in a basket. You can cover the basket with transparent paper, a pretty bow or ribbon. She'll love that, and have fun all the week long munching on her favourite treats.
#17. Wash and detail her car.
If mom's car hasn't been serviced in a while, maybe it would be fun to take it out, give it a good vacuum, an extra special cleaning, and even get dad to take it in for a service. Don't forget a pretty smelly to put in the car so it's nice and fresh when she's driving it.
#16. Paint the fence.
Sounds like a mundane thing to do for mom, but mom's spend time in the back or front yard, and giving a fresh coat of paint and cleaning up her favourite spot in the yard will make her feel good when she goes outside to relax.
#15. Make mom a bird feeder.
If mom likes relaxing in the yard, getting together with dad or grandpa and making her a special birdfeeder, or birdbath might make her smile. Set it up before she sees it, and see how long it take mom to notice.
#14. Get the pool yard detailed.
Get the pool guy in early, clean up the pool toys, and even get mom a pool toy of her own, maybe a floating blow up bed, and clean up the pool yard, remove old debris, and get it sparkly for mom to relax and have a barbeque for Mother's Day. Getting sparkling water crystals for the pool will really gleam and make mom smile.
#13. Let mom sleep in.
Go out for breakfast with the kids, and leave mom sleep in. Make her a nice breakfast on a tray with strawberries, Philly cream and bagels or scones, with her favourite coffee or tea brewing for her to find when she wakes up. When you get back you can lavish her with presents and surprises for the rest of the day.
#12. Make mom breakfast.
If you don't take the kids out, you can spend the morning making pancakes, with blueberries and cinnamon is great. Or you can heat up muffins, make bacon and eggs and let her sleep in. When you hear her stirring, take her in a tray of food, and let her enjoy breakfast in bed.
#11. Bubble bath.
Run mom a bubble bath after breakfast. Run mom a bubble bath, with some bath salts, light candles, and play her favourite music. She can take all the time she needs to get ready for her day, and you guys can go out in the yard and get things ready for her surprises while you wait.
#10. Don't fight.
Try for one day not to fight with each other, dad, or even mom. For the whole day don't dispute, do what everyone else is doing and if things don't go your way, it's ok.. Just be smiling and let mom have a stress free day with smiles and chuckles.
#9. If you live far away.
Show up on her doorstep unannounced. Try to make a special trip to see her and surprise her. Don't show up empty handed either, bring a basket of her favourite goodies, and take her someone where to enjoy it. She'll be thrilled to have you all to herself on her special day.
#8. Show up at church.
If mom likes going to church, and you haven't been paying much attention to it, with your own family, friends, staying out too late on Saturday evenings. Go home early on Saturday night, get in your Sunday's best and show up to drive her to church, and plan to take her out to lunch afterwards at her favourite restaurant, or plan a nice lunch at home.
#7. Mother's Day Evening, spend time with her.
Don't disappear after supper and leave her all alone. Rent or buy her, her favourite movie, and watch it with her, get some good munchies that she likes, and tend to her hand and foot during the entire evening. Laugh with her, and enjoy her company.
#6. Take mom out.
Mom's love going out, but no one ever has time to go with her. Think about mom's favourite places she likes to go to. The bird aviary, the zoo, botanical gardens, the beach.. Maybe Sunday night mass. Plan to take her someplace that she would enjoy, and you could even give her a few choices, buy a ticket to a concert, or something that is going on during Mother's Day, and have a blast with your mom.
#5. Don't let mom lift a finger.
Don't let her do anything stressful or choreful today. It's her day to be the Queen of the house, and she doesn't need to get kids drinks, sweep the floor from messes, catch up on the laundry or even make lunches for Monday Morning. Stay a step ahead of her and have it done before she usually does it.
#4. Moms love homemade cards.
Get the little ones together, give them paper, paints, markers, glitter, foam, whatever you can find and help them to make mom some personal cards from you. They will mean more to her than anything you can buy. You can also print out a nice picture of you, or the family, or of mom when she was young and put it on the card. She'll love it.
#3. Make mom a video.
Making DVD's is so easy now-a-days, making mom a special DVD of all her favourite pictures, showing mom hugging you, kissing boo boos better, playing with you in the yard, cooking in the kitchen. Put it to her favourite song, or one that is loving, and surprise her by setting her in her favourite chair, gathering around, and surprising her with something she can keep forever. If you live far away, mail it to her, and make sure she gets it before the weekend. Especially if you have kids, she will cherish every minute she's missing with your kids and can see them anytime she wants.
#2. Have a gathering.
Get everyone together and show up at her house, making sure you come to clean it sparkly the day before. Get all of her favourite people together for an afternoon of food, music, and fond memories. If you have some family members living far away try to get them to come home for Mother's Day and surprise her. Grandma's love this idea best.
#1. Love.
The number one best idea I could think of to show mom you care is love. You love your mom, so why not show her you love her-lots of big hugs, smiles, laughs, and shower her with affection and all the spoiling that you can fit into one day. Showing mom you care all year is important, but this her day-so let her know you know it.
Good luck, and I hope you and your mom have the bestest Mother's Day ever!
