I travel a lot and I get to meet a lot of people along the way. There are old friends and their families, people I have know most of my life and an almost endless flow of new faces and names. I have gotten somewhat used to the schedule over the years.

It's difficult for people who have never been in the public eye or followed such an extensive schedule to imagine the pressures and demands that are placed on someone with this pattern of living. When the process starts to become too much I often take some time to sequester myself away and write on some of the educational programs we offer.

However, during my travels and interactions with people I am appalled by the physical and mental condition of many. They walk at a crawl all stooped and bent over, shuffling to get in and out of vehicles and buildings. They physically show the signs of aging very quickly in their living years and become almost decrepit in their latter years, but the one thing that bothers me the most is how they think.

They think old and sick. This isn't just some fleeting moment of self-pity or thought of an unusual illness, but rather is a constant and consistent rumination over what has been wrong with them and what they are or think they are experiencing right now. They think about getting old and being sick all of the time. It is in every thought they have and every conversation they take part in.

The first thing they do when they get the newspaper is flip to the obituary section to see if anyone they know has passed. Death, age, illness and medicine permeate their existence to the very core. They now live for malady and death. They judge themselves and everyone else by health issues and medical conditions.

And they are right! You are what you think you are. If you think you are sick all of the time you will be sick. Your brain and body will align to make that a reality for you.

Healthy people think healthy. They are constantly focused on healthy living patterns and schedules that allow them to live with wellbeing. Medicine to them is something to be considered if there is a specific immediate need and even then in very limited amount and duration.

Healthy people are busy living. They don't dedicate the time, energy or mental effort to thoughts of getting older or sick. Obviously, there are moments when one contemplates getting older, but those moments pass quickly and don't usually linger in the healthy person's mind.

You get older and that has always been a fact of being a living creature. You age, and no person ever told you that you wouldn't so don't act surprised when you begin to show the signs of maturity and aging. Everyone wants to be and remain healthy, but illness does occur and it may happen to you or someone you know especially as age sets in and changes the physical body.

To dedicate almost every waking minute to the thoughts of sickness and age though is draining and also programs your brain to make that a reality in your living experience. Your brain cannot tell the difference between what you do want and what you don't. It only knows the predominant thoughts that you have and uses these thoughts to pattern your existence.

The gift I try to give to some of the people I meet is this. Think healthy and happy. Wake up each morning truly grateful for the people and experiences you have already enjoyed and for what you have right now. Trust me; there is always someone else out there somewhere who is far worse off than you. Think healthy thoughts, live by healthy patterns and don't give more than a fleeting moment to the thoughts of mortality and pain.

You are what you allow yourself to become. There will always be health issues looming for each of us, but you are the one who thinks yourself slowly into a state of decay. Health issues become more exaggerated when you become accepting of the pain, symptoms and results.

Learn to stand up and take control of your life including your thoughts and health. Minimize the conditions and feelings you have instead of pronouncing them to the world and any person who will listen to your woes. Grasp the fact that others do not view them as a badge of courage that you proudly wear as you shuffle along. Health conditions and the desire to talk about and live within them is a sad pattern. It is a lonely place where nothing positive is attempted or attained.

Life is vibrancy and zest for health and experience not another day long period of time to be passed wallowing in self-pity and the desire for attention from others.
