It was Sunday afternoon and I was glad to be home after a weekend away. I was catching up on e-mails and my husband was watching the history channel--Dogfights or something like that...

Lost in thought, I didn't hear the phone ring. The sound of my husband's voice caught my attention.

"Is he okay?"  My husband asks.

"Is it bad?"  That was my que--I half put on my shoes while running to the living room when Art yells, "Tree, we gotta go now! J is down and we don't know how bad it is!"

As we ran out of the door, I immediately called my dad to tell him to start praying, then I did the same. The ten minute drive up the hill seemed like an eternity! Art turned out of our cul-de-sac so fast, the box in the back seat fell over and everything was rolling around, which was extremely annoying. (Strange, the things that bother us when we are anxious.)

Anyway, as we pulled into Cody's driveway, my heart was racing and my husband and I were frantically scanning the property for someone to lead us to our son.

"HELLO, WHERE IS EVERYBODY?" My husband shouts with a voice of irritation.

"We are down here."  As we raced down the hillside, I tried to prepare myself for what I might see. Keep me strong for my baby boy,  I silently pray.

Okay, no blood, no protruding bones, but his right arm is looking a bit out of place. I can handle this...

As we hear the details of how J ended up 30 feet down, I feel a wide range of emotions. (As  parents of a dirt-bike rider, this is nothing new. Yet each time feels like the first time.)  As a mom, I get angry, then proud, then scared, then thankful that he is still breathing.

But this time was different...he came off of a jump in third gear (In retrospect "something I shouldn't have done" he says.) Gee, ya think? Anyway, it threw him off balance and forced his body to lean forward, causing him to put unwanted pressure on the throttle, which sent the bike straight toward a tree. Fortunately, he bailed before impact. Unfortunately, it sent him tumbling down the 30-foot drop that leads into the next jump.

In short, he was in extreme pain, more than all the other times put together. How do I know this you ask? Well, let me tell you... you learn a lot about your 17-year-old son when he is in pain.

He dropped the F-bomb more than once, he called his friend an A-hole for moving his arm on accident, and a few other choice words came from his mouth. But hey, if I was hurting like that, I probably would have done the same. Suck it upTeresa, at least he is talking.

After what seemed like hours, the paramedics arrived. But not just the paramedics. No, we had the best show in our little town: Three fire engines, three police cars, the fire chief and two paramedic vehicles and an ambulance, which translates into a crew of 15 and our town's entire emergency response unit.

My relief turned to anger and frustration. The first thing the police officers did was run checks on the bikes to make sure these punk kids didn't have stolen bikes. The second thing they did was run to my son. Do you think they asked him if he was okay or what happenend? No. That would be the right thing to do. Instead, one of the officers looked at him in disgust and said, "Son, have you been drinking?" (I thought my husband was going to be arrested for assaulting a police officer.)

"No Sir, I don't drink."

"Have you been doing any drugs, or anything you shouldn't be doing?"

"No man, me and my friends are just hanging out riding motorcycles!"

"Blow in my face for me, will you?"

In the meanwhile, the other officers are staring at the other boys and walking around the property to see if they can find any proof of what they were so sure they would find.  Never mind the fact that they insulted Cody's parents.

I will give the officer this, it is his job to be sure that it is not an alcohol related incident, but to come on the property expecting to be proved right is extremely frustrating!!

Apparently, Cody had enough and spoke up... "Dude, we are just riding and having good clean fun. Everyone keeps trying to make it a law that kids can't ride, so we ride on our own property. Would you prefer us to be hanging out in parks drinking and doing drugs?"

It probably wasn't the wisest thing to say, but his point was well made and all of us parents had to agree.

The officer, still kneeling in my son's face, finally stood up and looked around one last time. I thought I was being paranoid, but everyone, especially all the boys said that the cop actually looked disappointed.

While following the ambulance to the hospital, I was thinking about how blessed I was that my son and all his buddies disappointed these police officers...

As I mentioned earlier, it is amazing what you learn about your 17-year-old son when he is injured. We hadn't been at the hospital more than five minutes and his cell phone was buzzing like crazy!!  One, two, three, four text messages in a row. All girls!!

"O my gosh, J!", laughing as I tell him.

"What can I say mom, it happens."

So, the cops are disappointed, my son is safe, sober and in a sling. (Can you believe his only injury was a dislocated shoulder and a little road-rash on his side? It had to be the prayers.)

I will always remember this as one of the most unlikely yet greatest gifts I will ever receive.

Although, I might re-think this when the bills come in right around Mother's Day.

Well done, Teresa. It hurts to see your loved one in pain as a statistic. Great job!!!

Hi Ken, thanks for the kind words. Yes, it is hard to watch, but still I am glad he has a sport that he loves and is good at--except when he crashes. :-) He has respectfully and enduringly earned the nick name crash. He loves it. :-) Blessings to you!

My goodness, Teresa. It's hard enough to see our boys (or girls) in pain, but to be thought of as guilty before caring if they are hurt, is inexcusable. I know the law says that you are innocent until proven guilty. I know the police also have a rough time, but I think their first job is to make sure the person is taken care of before making accusations. However, Jesus was not treated very well either and he was guilty of nothing but love!!! :-) Thank God for Justin's clear head and pure heart. Blessings to you all!

Hi Cathy, thanks for the comment. It is pretty sad, and I do understand that unfortunately this is often the case. But not always. Justin is not perfect by far, but some things are worth praising. He has said many times that the temptation is tough and if he didn't have his commitment and love for riding, he doesn't know how he would resist. Kids need something to do. No matter if it is sports, art or music. I just wish that riding wasn't looked so down upon. I agree it has its dangers, but my goodness, not everyone is into art or music. And yes, thank God he is okay. I continue to pray for today's kids! Many blessings back to you!

Teresa~
I'm so glad he's okay. It's a sad state of affairs when things like this happen (with the cops), but thankfully, your son DID prove them wrong. Sounds like you have a fine boy. Well done, Madam!
Hugs and Prayers for ALL of You~

Hi Camille, thanks for the support and prayers! I do need to be praying for our police officers, they do deal with a lot of negativity. And I pray my son and his buddies will continue to prove them wrong. Hugs and prayers right back to you and for you :-)

Just wanted to add that I know that there are many people, adults included that drink and ride, drink and drive etc.. so for you officers who are reading, I do understand. :-) And though kids who have activities and things to keep them busy, doesn't mean they will not fall into temptation. However, with lots of love, support, communication and prayer for our kids, it can make a huge difference! Thanks again for reading!

Hi Ethel!!! How are you chickie? Thanks for the great compliment! I'm glad it had a good ending as well! He is feeling much better. In fact, he is going to his prom Saturday night. He still can't use his arm, but he can straighten it and next week he will start rotating it and stretching it. He should be able to go back to work in 2 weeks.

Hi Sue, yes it was a bummer for sure!!!!! Not the best phone call of the day. But it turned out well and he is doing much better. He went to his prom last night and had a great time. And the most wonderful thing came of this situation! God uses everything and I am blessed by the outcome. Thanks for reading and the heart-felt words for my son. All the best to you too! Teresa

What is the point here? Young people, society, everyone guilty automatically. Now if you had not been there what might have happened? I can tell you first hand. I had the same with my son until I spoke upa nd confronted the police officers. Now we can say they are just doing their job. Howevr, we also get a first hand look at how that is done. So in my opinion by experience like health care if you have noa dvocate, no one to speak for you, no one toinsure you are treated with dignity and respect regardless of age, you get "The Lone ranger'. Sorry. Like I said I have sen it first hand more often then not working with youth. Best wishes, goor article.

Hi Robert, I am with you on this. I think there is a fine line of them doing their job, and them assuming guilt before all else. Thanks for commenting, I always appreciate your input!! God bless. Teresa

Theresa, I know exactly what you went through at all angles. My son hit black ice driving home around midnight several years ago. The car was destroyed, but with God's grace he and his friend walked away. The first Officer on the scene was like an animal, wanting to know how much he had been drinking! My son doesn't drink and he hadn't had a drop. On the other side of the coin, he is now a grown man and a police officer for a large city. He knows what it is like to be on both sides and this has made him a very compassionate officer. Very Good Article. Kimberly

Praise God for his protection over your son and his friend! My daughter was in an accident when she was in high school, the car flipped and she and her friend walked away with a few bruises. God gave me a warning as I actually saw earlier that day that she was going to be in an accident and I prayed. God is awesome. It's great to hear that your son is one of the good guys out there. I know there are some wonderful police officers and I thank God for them. Thanks for sharing the hope :-) Many blessings to you.

I am glad all is well. I can relate... Last week my son fell at high school and lost consciousness. When I got there (3.5minutes from home) he was awake. I said I would drive him to the hospital (2.5 miles) but the ambulance driver said the ambulance had to take him. The deputy sheriff informed me to get out of the way or I would go to jail. I said I do not authorize the ambulance ride, so they took him to a hospital 22 miles away.

The trip cost $1,800.00 and insurance does not cover it. Now that is a racket.

Thanks for the well wishes. I am sorry to hear about your son, I hope he is feeling much better and they resolved the issue! That is crazy about the ambulance taking him so far away!!! I feel your frustration on this one! My husband and I decided to get firemed, I don't know if they have it where you are, but for $80.00 a year, we get unlimited ambulance and life flight use for the whole family. With my son racing, I think it will be much cheaper to go this route. I am not looking forward to receiving the ambulance bill, but I believe my aflac insurance will help cover some of it.

Again, I hope all is well with your son. Thanks for reading and taking a moment to coment. Blessings to you! Teresa
