The Labour Party were trounced in this weeks council elections with the Conservative party making huge gains. Gordon Brown must act swiftly to repair some of the damage before some of the parties members try to oust him.

So where did it all go wrong for Prime Minister Brown?

The Prime Minister may believe that he has been rather unfortunate to come into office and then be hit with a number of major issues virtually straight away. The Northern Rock debacle, the credit crunch and numerous accounts of lost public date were all to hit confidence hard.

In reality a Prime Minister has to contend with a number of difficult scenarios each year and all the country ask is that he/she acts in a decisive and competent manner, Gordon Brown did neither of these. I have been personally surprised, especially on financial matters, that Mr Brown has shown such weak leadership.

The Prime Minister then made an unforgivable error with his tax reforms which hit the real core of the parties voters, the low paid. This was a bizarre error and one which he attempted to paper over, this back down did him little favours and did not resolve the issues.

What should the Prime Minister do next?

Gordon Brown needs to show some of his leadership qualities and he can start by fixing the problems in the mortgage market. It is criminal that lenders do not pass on interest rate cuts when they occur; they are quick enough to raise them after all.

By helping the finances of the lowest paid and showing a little more power will soon get the public back onto his side, so come on Mr Brown, stop pussy footing about and start to resolve some of these financial issues.
