The world was astonished when the CNN aired graphic pictures of the reality on the ground in Myanmar on 5/12/2008. Villages submerged and corpses of both human beings and animals scattered everywhere and no help is being made after ten days to help the victims of the cyclone. The military Government is doing everything to hamper the delivery of help yet the UN is still contemplating on what to do because the Myanmar Juanta have refused to grant access to the victims.
How many more lives must be lost before the UN realizes the intensity of this catastrophe! Are Myanmar people second class human beings to warrant such kind of inhuman treatment yet the world is turning a blind eye on them? Where is the US that was quick to jump on Saddam Hussein to help these victims?
The Myanmar regime showed to the world few months ago how they have no regard for human life when they killed hundreds of protesting monks and the UN did nothing but to make noise from a distant. Now, no international Journalists are allowed in that Country yet the world have seen what is going on. There is also evidence that the Military regime is confiscating international aids and distributing locally made rotten rice to the victims yet the world continues to supply more aids to Myanmar.
This is the time for US, UK or any world power to take initiative and save lives. A military threat will allow access to these victims by disaster experts and a lot of lives will be saved. It's not late to save lives!
The world is aware that Myanmar lacks disaster experts to deal with that catastrophe and by refusing to allow world catastrophe experts in the Country; Myanmar's rogue regime is committing passive genocide. Because of this, the UN has clearly demonstrated how ineffective it is.
This calls for complete overhaul of the U.N body and proper restructuring to have a clear purpose and authority to use military action in cases of passive genocide. This must start with resignation of the current secretary general Mr. Moon who has proved to be too diplomatic to handle urgent world catastrophes.There are a lot of problems in the worlds that can only be addressed by an authoritative UN body. The cases of Myanmar and Zimbabwe are just but a few examples of such.
Unless proper changes are made on the UN body, it will remain a spectator in the international conflict and encourage rogue regimes to continue with their passive human genocide as being witnessed in Myanmar and Zimbabwe.

I agree with Robert above. The U.N. is an impotent, money wasting and totally politically motivated institution which should be abolished. The League of Nations established after World War One was created for the same purpose as the U.N. and did very well until some need arose and then failed miserably and was demolished. The U. N. has nothing to it's credit except failures. The U.S. is footing an unfair portion of the cost while allowing all the foreign ambassadors immunity from punishment for breaking our laws while here. They are making every effort to drag the U.S. into a world government situation where those, other than our elected officials will have authority over us.
