It really gripes me when I make a telephone call for one of my business accounts and I am transferred to some person in a far off country. I have complained to the person that answers the phone and I am told that it is an international corporation and there are people all over the world that answer the phone. My response is that I am not spending "international" money and since I am not in international waters I really do not give two hoots where their company does business. If they want my money they better have a person in America answer the phone.

My gripe is that we, as a nation, barely manufacture any products anymore and now we do not even answer our telephones. The way I see the situation unwinding does not offer a good scenario for the United States if we do not change our ways. The national debt is out of control (China is who we owe the debt, for the most part) our job situation is worsening and our food and gas prices are on a collision course that can wreck our standard of living. Everyone I gripe to says there is not much we can do about the issue as an individual. I say this is not true.

I would like to invite everyone to the following solution:

When you call a toll free number you must remember that the cost of the call is paid by the company. With that being said, cost is the only thing corporations understand. What I request is that you ask the following question to the person on the phone if the accent is not that of the good old USA. You ask very precisely, "Where are you located in the world?" The response will be misleading because they do not want you to know they are not in America. Press the situation until you learn what country they are located. Once you learn they are overseas then request they transfer the call to the United States. Again you will get excuses why they should not do this and you will need to press for the call to be transfered.

What this will do is send a signal that Americans want their customer service in America and that we want to speak to Americans. If EVERY American were to demand this service we would see a flood of new jobs come back to the United States. We need the jobs because all the burger joints are full and there really are not too many other jobs out there. Retail and burger joints are where millions of Americans work and we need to start the process of bringing the jobs back.

I am not racist and have no ill will towards any nation or people. I just know that if we, as a nation, can't even answer the phone, what will we do when the day comes when there are NO jobs left at all? If you do not see what I see then you are not looking hard enough. Demand (politely) that your call be transferred, the job you save may be your own!

Mr. Keith great job. Yes I keep calling back time after time after time and keep asking to speak to someone in America. They have all your personal info right infont of them and we're worried about Homeland Security and ID Theft. her is also something to add. I ask for collections and bingo they put me right through. Money you know. Then guess what I say sorry wrong department can you transfer me and they do. No resolution I start the process all over again. I enjoy your work keep up the good job! Oh by the way do you really think that is "Charlie' on the phone or "Susan"? the entire conversation starts with a lie. That should tell you about the company you are doingt business with. best regards.

Good article Mr Keith

I too am irked by this current situation. It is especially frustrating when you call a toll free number regarding personal urgent business and the person you need to chat with can barely speak or understand the english language. The large multinationals have let the bottom line rule their ways of thinking and as a result have alienated the customers they so desperately need to keep.

We, as a society have let this happen because we were quiet. If more people complained it would change.

I appreciate your views in your article. However, I see no harm if someone answers my phone call in India. People in the third world countries are ready to work harder to earn their wages. You must remember that the person answering your phonecall in India is working from 11 p.m. to 7.a. m. Not your regular working hours, are they? You cannot blame India if they take advantage of the Americans being lazy. After all, it was the Americans who got into the habit of getting all their work done from someone else.

Are you kidding me???? You have been listening to too much liberal crap to connect a coherent thought that has any basis in reality.

There is harm if people are answering the phones in India. The harm is we have less jobs here in America. I really do not care how hard people work in a third world nation. I am concerned only with the status of the United States. I worked at a retail store for the last 4 years working 11 hour shifts everyday!!!! (Welcome to management!)

Who the heck are you to to state Americans are being lazy? I work my tail off as do almost all of my coworkers. It has nothing to do with being lazy. It has everything to do with GREED. The companies want to earn a larger and larger profit. You are a fool if you think America is a lazy country. We were real lazy when we rescued and CONQUERED the ENTIRE world in WWII and then GAVE it all back. But then I guess I am just an arrogant American huh?

Let me guess...You also agree that America is the world polluter and that we need to stop "global warming" and the U.S. needs to pay ($$) the world off for it's sins.

You need to wake up and see the world for what it is or learn how to speak Chinese.

Are you annoyed yet?
