So, you're about to begin your business card design and you probably have arrived at this page because you were searching for a cool business card idea. Quite often, innovative business card ideas get misunderstood and your actaul message to prospective customers becomes lost in the very idea itself. In short, radical attempts at originality, can in fact have an inverse effect, where the card recipient has more questions about what you actually do and why you chose such an idea for your business card in the first place. The best approach is to draw on business card design best practices and visit an online business card printer website to play around with a few of your ideas before you go to print.

Create a Business Tag Line
The best thing to do is first grab a piece of paper and pen and start to develop a tag line that either captures the essense of your business, or at the very least is a broad statement of your business vision, your goal, or something which makes people think. Sometimes called a "motto" or in more professional circles, a "competency statement", your tag line should be short, to the point, sometimes catchy, but always memorable. Your approach can be more direct, such as this tag line provided by an enormously successful Canadian mattress manufacturer. "Why buy a mattress anywhere else", is clear and to the point and the tag line is an integral part of it's entire marketing campaign and it's success. Other tag lines are more abstract, but memorable, such as McDonald's campaign "I'm loving it". Some tag lines can be simple and convey your qualifications and help build trust in the customer that you are the right person to deal with (for example: Jim Smith, Certified Programmer, or Eric Gibson, Professional Photographer). There is no rule for the lag line, as long as it is tasteful, positive, short and to the point.

Full Color Photo Images Photo images are gaining momemtum among business card designs, because people have a tendency to have a better memory for visual images rather than text which appears on the card. For example, if you are a wedding planner, or a hair stylist, even subtle full color imagery can be effective to communicate a message without even using words. It creates a quick visual representation of your business, or area of expertise and can have a much longer lasting impression if you are short on words!

If you are still looking for innovative ideas, consider the type of business card you use. You can use traditional, yet practical and effective business cards printed on carstock, or experiment with more unique business cards and extend your approach to business card marketing with cards that impress and will help make your business be remembered.
