Are you a politics Junky? Is CNN and CSPAN constantly playing in the background? Then we are brethren, and like me, you probably want to own a piece of what made America great.

Although, my budget was more for a hanging chad, I dreamed of owning Roosevelt’s big stick or Jefferson’s Quill. As a semi-pro, armchair politician, I always imagined playing Commander in Chief in my home office. Of course, one would need a Resolute Desk to do that right!

When The Desk -- also called The Presidents Desk -- was featured in the movie, "National Treasure: Book of Secrets", I knew that someone had to be making spitting image replicas. I wanted mine down to the correct nails and screws. I just wanted it with out the intensity of Nicolas Cage.

Many presidents have used the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. It was made from the timbers of HMS Resolute, an abandoned British ship discovered by an American vessel and returned to the Queen of England as a token of friendship and goodwill. When the ship was retired, Queen Victoria commissioned the desk from William Evenden and presented it to President Rutherford Hayes in 1880.

You probably remember the famous photo of John Kennedy Jr. playing under the secret door of the table while his Dad worked on. Imagine owning a piece of history like that!

On trying to locate an accurate replica, I found one in The Jimmy Carter Library in Atlanta. Even though I’m a registered Democrat, they didn’t let me sit behind it. Well, not for very long before the guards came.

The best reproduction I’ve found is being made by a local Georgian company called Thomaston Furniture Designs. It is exact to every detail. It is totally benchmade and handcarved. Made of the finest Mahogany wood, the desk is topped with leather. It has the secret door, the brass plaque and antiquated look.

These guys can also custom build anything from a museum piece for a sheik to a custom gun cabinet for a cabal of Texan oilmen.

Now, that I finally have my dream desk, I’m bidding on FDR’S chair. Hey, ya gotta sit somewhere.
