If you are, or ever were a Chihuahua owner, you know how much they mean to you. In fact, many people consider their Chihuahuas a part of the family rather than just a pet. However, these loving animals can have a tendency to bark uncontrollably, which can lead to unhappy family members and neighbors. Fortunately there are ways to train a Chihuahua to kick this habit. However, all of them take time, patience, and dedication to be successful.

Chihuahuas are known to bark for many different reasons. One of the most common reasons is for the simple fact that they want to go outside to either go potty, or to run and play. You can help keep your Chihuahua from barking for these reasons by making sure he is taken outside often.

Another common reason Chihuahuas will bark is because they hear a noise outside that either scares or excites them. If your Chihuahua starts barking because of this, try to give him or her a toy to chew on. Toys are a great way to keep your Chihuahua distracted from the surrounding noises. Be sure to give your Chihuahua a treat if they are good and stop barking.

Some of you Chihuahua owners will know you can teach your Chihuahua to speak. This is another great way to stop your Chihuahua from barking. Try to say the "speak" command the next time they are barking loudly. Oftentimes this will gain the attention of the Chihuahua and distract them from their barking. If they stop barking because of this, be sure to pet them and give them a treat.

It is important to remember that Chihuahuas are much more fragile than other dog breeds. That is why you should never physically hit them as a form of punishment for barking. Instead, speak a command, such as "Bad", or "No" in a firm manner. This is all you need to do to discipline your Chihuahua, being physical will only have a negative affect on their training.

It is normal for all dogs to bark, Chihuahuas included. Don't feel like your Chihuahua isn't learning if they still bark, they just need to control it. Spend time using these training techniques and you should be on your way to having a better trained Chihuahua. I hope the article will help you get a little bit more peaceful sleep at night!
