These tents are suitable for different outdoor experiences, such as camping vacations, fishing trips, picnics, backyard parties and large outdoor functions. Canvas tents are very popular due to their versatility and durability.

* Double-stitched seams. Seams of this type are stronger than single-stitched and are able to withstand more stress. They also are flatter against the canvas.

* Extra-tough material in strategic areas. Areas that receive more anchoring and stretching of fabric need this additional reinforcement.

* Quality appearance. A good canvas tent is visually appealing. A quality canvas tent does not sacrifice attractive, contemporary design just because the material is resilient.

Alternatives to canvas tents are made of realite, polaris, gala and nylon. These materials are all synthetic in nature and do not breathe like canvas. Canvas can consist of natural cotton, hemp or jute fibers.

When choosing a canvas tent, it's wise to choose one that has a back door or window. This allows for excellent cross-ventilation, which is needed in some conditions. A tent with a stovepipe opening is excellent for those longer trips in conditions that are not conducive to cooking outdoors. You can purchase a canvas tent that comes with a silver polyester rain fly, which helps reflect heat away from the tent. You may want to consider buying a tent that has strong nylon door zippers for longer wear. Thick flaps to cover tent doors are also advisable. Tent color is a matter of personal preference, but white canvas will reflect your lantern light better.

It's imperative to transport your canvas tent in a storage bag. This will keep the tent clean so it does not accumulate dirt and dust into its fabric, which can contribute to fabric breakdown.

If you are not sure about what size camping tent to purchase, always lean toward larger. Supplies can accumulate quickly. Having room for them will save you from living in cramped quarters on your camping vacation. There also might be a person joining your trip at the last minute. You will appreciate the extra room you have.
