The joy of owning a puppy and seeing it grow up is among the most gratifying experiences that a dog lover could ask for. There are many things that you and the puppy will discover about each other en route to establishing a long and trusting relationship. House training a puppy is one of the first tasks that completed if you are going to have the puppy indoors for any length of time. Fortunately, a puppy learns things very fast, and house training can be learned very quickly. This is why it is so important to establish the correct house training routine while the puppy is at a young age. It is crucial to get the house training routine established correctly the first time, because it is hard to break a bad habit once it is ingrained.

Watching the puppy during the initial house training phase is one of the most important things you can do. Keep a close eye on the puppy while at the same time observing the time. If it is a beautiful day outside, and your puppy is very active, taking him out more than once an hour is a good idea. A puppy's metabolism is so fast, that he must consume more water than he would if he were fully grown. He has to eat a lot more often to feed this higher metabolism, also. Just remember that all of this eating and drinking will make the puppy have to "go" more than normal.

You may want to try house training your puppy by using the paper method, which basically has the puppy using the bathroom on newspapers. It can be tough on your puppy to start relieving himself outdoors if he is taught to relieve himself indoors. Actually, this technique will make it more difficult and take longer to house train your puppy. By teaching your puppy to "go" outside, he will learn that it is not acceptable to "go" in the house. Relieving himself near the newspaper instead of on the newspaper is a habit the puppy could get in, also. Just keep things consitent by having your puppy relieve himself only outside.

Another system, known as the "crate" system, has been shown to have very good results. You keep the puppy in a crate for about an hour, and then take the puppy outdoors so he can relieve himself. While in the crate, the puppy is trained to "hold it" until he is let out to relieve himself, which is normally outdoors. The logic behind this system is that a puppy doesn't want to mess up its living area if it doesn't have to. If you keep the puppy in the crate too long, it could cause him to relieve himself in the crate. If this happens, it can compromise this training technique.

Establishing good house training habits is an important first step in training a puppy. The most important thing to remember with house training a puppy is to be consistent and offer him a tremendous amount of praise. It is okay if the puppy has an accident during this training, because the process is not an overnight thing. By carrying the puppy outside more often, this should put an end to these accidents. If the puppy has an accident after training has ended, don't punish him. Merely return back to the training process temporarily and you'll be back on track in no time.
