A cat can be a pet and also a friend. If you plan on your cat living for many years, make sure you are knowledgeable in the proper care of cats.

Before bringing your new pet home from the shelter or store, make sure you have purchased a bed, food dish, and litter box. Cats will wander around both within and outside your house, so you should ensure that your cat has a collar with your contact information so that your neighbors will know where to return your cat should they come across it.

Another option is to insert a microchip under their skin. Aside from using it merely to identify the cat if it gets lost, it also has another purpose which is a flea deterrent because it has a chemical that helps keep these parasites away.

The best made cat foods are the only ones you should purchase for your pet. These should contain a lot of protein, which can be found in fish, meat, and poultry. Kibble.and canned versions are both available, and nutritionalists generally believe that, to prevent an addiction to one kind of food, they should be mixed.

One thing you must never feed a cat is chocolate because it has certain chemicals that could be fatal for them.

Along with their regular diet, you can supplement your cat's food with fish oil and taurine,  an important amino acid.

Remember to take your cat to the veterinarian at least one time a year. This is to inspect on your pet's health condition and also for giving the yearly vaccinations. Keep in mind that, as your cat gets older, these visits should occur every six months.

If there is an issue or doubt that something is abnormal, drive to a vet immediately in spite the fact that you don't have an appointment. Keep in mind that for handling cats, this is a specialized professional.

It is important to trim their nails, otherwise they might hurt either you or themselves by scratching too hard. Since cats love to scratch, having a scratch pad nearby may save your furniture from damage.

Housecats, as their name implies, should always be kept in the house. If ever you go out, make sure all the windows and doors are locked.

If you take good care of your cat, it could possibly live in excess of ten years.
