SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) -- George Carlin, the dean of counterculture comedians whose biting insights on life and language were immortalized in his "Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV" routine, died of heart failure Sunday. He was 71.
Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, went into St. John's Medical Center in Santa Monica on Sunday afternoon complaining of chest pain and died later that evening, said his publicist, Jeff Abraham. He had performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas.
I remember the day I had first heard of George Carlin. My family was visiting my step sister in Alabama and she knew that my mother didn't approve of foul language yet proceeded to put on a record of George's comedy. Every other word was F-this and F-that. I thought my mother was going to burst!hahah I found the comedy quite hilarious but my mother didn't any of it. Over the years, I came to love the jokes that came from George's mouth. He was fresh. He was new and his style was sort of hippy-ish. I thought he was cool.
I was very sad to learn that he had passed away on Sunday. The comedy world will not be the same without him. Good-bye George. May you keep those old hippies in heaven laughing and my condolances for your family.
