Political campaigns can get down right nasty. The presidential campaign of 2008 is no exception. Accusations and allegations between contenders and their supporters have spiraled into a cyclonic cloud of confusion that so blurs reality that many voters are left completely in the dark when it comes to ascertaining the truth. In our high tech world of instant messaging and e-mails every imaginable scenario can permeate the hearts and minds of untold millions of unsuspecting citizens at lightning speed with misinformation that both slanders and maligns the character of the politician. The urban legends that are conceived in this environment can so adversely affect our social dynamics as to forever change the history of our nation.

One such urban legend that has recently saturated the Internet is the allegation that Barack Obama is the Antichrist. Such a malicious and chilling accusation can easily deceive the unwary and those who have only a limited knowledge of the Bible. Does the Bible suggest that Barack Obama is the Antichrist? Let us take a look at the allegations and compare them to what the Bible says.

The urban legend alleges that Barack Obama is the Antichrist because it claims the Bible "says":

  1. The Antichrist will be in his mid 40s.
  2. The Antichrist will be a Muslim.
  3. The Antichrist will be elegant in speech.

What the Bible does NOT say about the Antichrist:

  1. The Bible does not say that the Antichrist will be in his mid 40s. As a matter of fact the Bible does not indicate any age whatsoever for the Antichrist.
  2. The Bible does not say that the Antichrist will be a Muslim. The Bible does not state any particular religion of the Antichrist.
  3. The Bible does not say that the Antichrist will be "elegant" in speech. The Bible says that the Antichrist will speak blasphemies against God.
For those whom are interested they may find more information regarding what the Bible does say about the Antichrist in the Book of Revelation. Chapter 13 is particularly helpful.

Just for the record, Barack Obama is not a Muslim. He has been a Christian for over 20 years.

Im sorry how easily fooled you people are.  Someone says he "isnt the antichrist" and you all go, oh yeah thats right he isnt.  If someone wrote a long winded explanation with quotes saying he was, you would all agree with that.  But at the end of the day only time will tell.  And it doesnt say he will blaspheme God, if your a true christian and read up on things, he will come across as loving, want world peace, say all good things about God.  Pretty much paint the picture of lets hold hands, drink a coke and sing.  Also, world disarmement, one total currency.  Ohama is of muslim origin, just because he has been a christian for 20 years doesnt mean to say he isnt true to his roots.  And lets face it folks, he's a politician, he will lie through his teeth and deny knowing his grandmother if it meant getting elected.  Wake up folks!  Coffee's on!

I heard that the Antichrist would be a guy named Dan from the UK who would try to blame some other guy by telling lies about his religion and motivations.  But then, I'm not actually basing this opinion on the Bible, so I can say anything, right??

the antichrist will come from the east... the antichrist will be gay- just look around - Obama, may be the one to usher in the antichrist  due to the fact that this country is spilt down the middle due to the color of his skin.  the people of the USA will turn against each other- that is written in the bible - we will destroy each other over the color of this mans skin. we will destroy the finacial structure, neighbors we once bbq with and sat out side to drink with, will no longer be our friends.  once we have destroyed each other, this country then and only then will the antichrist appear - he will correct the mess we made, due to the color of Obama's skin. he will put in place financial structures we tore down, he will rebuild and make friends with the USA again... for God sake people wake up save yourselfs and this great country. Obama his here so that you all may destroy each other and take us back to where we came from - slavery-  history is repeating itself and no one is watching....God is missing from schools, children are all ready disrespecting there parents, we alll have idols- money and the love of it that why we dont take the 2 week vacation we are offered...the family is broken- every home - divorce rate is up - drugs - teen pregnancy- just as many wifes are cheating on their husbands as their husbands are cheating on them  numbers are equal. we worship in t-shirts and sneakers, we show more boob's in church then we do at the beach.  we have drive by services - we dont eat dinner together as a family anymore we work 7 days a week 12 month a year - halloween generates more money than Christmas - oh yea its not Christmas anymore it is Happy Holiday-  you people are sick- we will usher in the antichrist...OBAMA - DO WHAT YOU DO AND KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO...MY HOME IS NEAR!

Has anyone actually read and tried to understand the context of the bible when it refers to the "antichrists" it is actually a plural reference and refers to all people who are against christ in the last days (the "last days" began counting down when jesus was crucified) It just sensationalizes the term when it is taken out of context and applied to some singular man who will ultimately bring about the end of the world and scare the world into religion. I am a christian, but i am one who reads the bible for what it actually says, not what I want to hear or what is gonna sound good from the pulpit. Before you onslaught this comment with disagreements, take the time to read your bible for yourself.

What does worshipping in sneakers and t-shirts have to do with being a beleiver.  My opinion on that is that if you are more worried about what people wear to a church service, maybe you are there for the wrong reason. Would Jesus care more about our clothes than our hearts? I don't think so. Be glad that those sneakers, t-shirts and boobs made it there to worship. If we are all that judgemental without knowing anyones story, it's no wonder why many people can't stand Christians.

Is Satan not known as the great deceiver?

Jerry Falwell said that the anti-Christ is already born in Israel and is a Jew, just as Jesus was. Other well-known preachers say other things about the same Book of Revelations.

The Book of Revelations cannot be properly understood unless one is a scholar of Judaism, the Hebrew language and the letters of that language correspondence to numerals. What's more, St. John cannot be fully understood at all if taken out of his culture and era. The Beast is Empire, cruel and oppressive. In St John's time, the Empire was Roman. Want to guess who is the beast today? Here's a hint. We are living in it's belly.

Just think about deception for a moment. We, Americans, are so accustomed to being deceived by everything from corporate advertisement on television, radio, news papers and now the Internet, to local advertising, to government officials, etc. that we don't even wince anymore in the face of out-right lies. This is nothing new, but it is getting worse. It is deception that will be this country's down-fall, especially in the form of fear-mongering. Jesus told us not to fear. Those who would purposefully cause people to be afraid are the agents of evil, whether they accomplish that through terrorist acts, unnecessary, unjust wars, torture or through deceptive words (propaganda). Where there is perfect faith, there can be no fear. Fear-mongers are the enemies of faith.

I don't recall Jesus ever saying anything about the anti-Christ during his 3 year ministry. No where do I find that he ever mentioned homosexuality, let alone abortion and neither of those issues are new. I am not pro-abortion. I don't know anyone who is. Yet I am loath to make laws forbidding the procedure in cases where the mother's health or life is at risk or in situations where the fetus is the result of rape or incest, both of which happen far more than the general public is aware.

Obama is not the anti-christ. Devoting ones life to helping the poor and the oppressed seems more Christ-like to me than anti-christ. Like his mother before him, Obama has spent his entire adult life doing just that.

As a priest once said to me, we could do with less Christians and more people who are Christ-like. Jesus said take up your cross and follow me. I believe, and always will, that that was a call to follow in His footsteps, to be like him, to do as he did; have compassion for the poor and the disabled, for those who are oppressed and ostracized by governments and societies, as the lepers were in Jesus' day, among others.

Jesus reserved his firey criticisms for the priests of a corrupt temple (religion). I imagine he would do the same today. The Churches and pastors who are busy condemning others while building great wealth would be His prime targets, as they are doing this in His name. He taught us to forgive and to love, even our enemies. He spoke truth to corrupt power and was executed for it. Death is often the result of speaking truth to power. It isn't easy to follow Him. One must be wiling to face harsh lies and smear jobs, imprisonment or death, as oppressive empires and corrupt religion will always be with us, it seems, and will kill anyone who actually threatens the corrupt status quo.

Thank you for your insite into Gods truth. Now adays people tend to turn their backs to truth to embrace hate. People who hate will rather embrace a lie inorder to comfirm their twisted ideas and prejudice instead of seeking truth to offer light to those in the dark.

In todays world know one can speak all things to all people and be successful in fulfilling a plan to help those who can't help their self. Its as though we create a liar of a well intentioned person because that person needs to say what it takes to gain position that will enable them to help the people who need it most. Its very sad but true the American people are becoming more like the ancient cities of Soddom and Gamora. We are turning our backs on morality and love for our fellow man. We embrace a man of war instead of a man of peace and will not concidder a man who will speak truth to power for a man who will use power to enforce what he concidders to be truth. Gods word is of truth and peace not hate and prejudice.

All I can say is, we are in our last days and we need to be serious about whos side we are on in Gods world. Stop the hate, see the light , embrace God, and love your fellow man no matter the color of their skin or gender(Man or Woman)and embrace a message of peace not that of hate and lies. When it comes to gender their are no variations only "Man" or "Woman" and thats truth not hate.

I was so impressed with your post, Marty. What a breath of fresh air to hear values espoused, in a post about Christ, that actually resemble the standards Christ himself set by example. Whoever sits in a Church that condones, or even ignores, hatred against homosexuals, betrays the patience and forbearance inherent in the words "Judge not . . . lest ye be judged . . . ."
I would add only one thought -- anyone who REALLY would like to parse the Bible's message should learn Aramaic, not just Hebrew. Language changes over time. What we might read in Hebrew now wouldn't necessarily reveal all that was originally there in the Book of Revelations.

Marty from Georgia,

Well written brother. Well written indeed. Too many people take small specific items from the Bible in an attempt to validate their points. Then when their " chapter and verse" is contested, they freak out and backpedal. More often than not, try to use OTHER chapter and verse to support their views. Revelation is a PURE example of that. Tons of people quote it, barely anyone alive today UNDERSTANDS it, and those that do, usually keep their views to themselves!

For the record, Revelation is NOT part of the "Infallible Word of God". That is reserved for the four Gospels.

To the guy that put forth his view about Obama's name compared to John, Paul, etc, etc...

Those are Anglicized names man. It truly worries me that SO many people think exactly the way that guy does.

Anyway, back to Marty...

Again, great post man!

Ice from NYC

wow.. what a great way to get around the truths of revelation.. I think the same God that has the power to preserve His Word no matter what has the same power to keep it true in EVERY language..  you don't have to study Hebrew to know what Revelations is saying about the beast.. stop trying to paraphrase the Bible for your own uses

The Democratic Party in general is trying to silence Christians. The party attributes great evil and hate to our motivations to live a Christ-like life. Maybe it's less about who the Anti-Christ will be and more a point of which part will put him in power.

The Democratic Party is not trying to silence Christians--we're looking for more real Christians instead of hateful fearmongers who wouldn't recognize Jesus Christ if he came and sat down in their living room.  They'd probably think he was a Democrat and claim some line in the Bible required them to spread more lies about him.

Religion is man made, so there is no right religion! Jesus is looking for a personal relationship with Him no matter what the religion. Let us not forget that God's word commands us to love your enemy as yourself. It also tells us to - "judge not, lest ye be judged," and "let he who has not sinned cast the first stone." I know we all have different opinions and theology, but I think we are stepping out of line when we judge others for what we think they say or do. I don't want to cast any stones. Shouln't we leave that up to God?

I've read all the above postings & I try so hard not to weep for all the judgment calls that so many others cast about. No, I don't have a bible sitting in front of me & no, I can't quote you chapter & verse. I can't truly say that Barack Obama is either good or evil, nor can I say the same thing about John McCain. What I do know is that G.W. Bush & his regime have perpetrated the most diabolical plan of destruction ever done to a country & it's people since Adolph Hitler.

To elaborately plan & then to implement that plan & murder several thousand of his own citizens to usurp the Constitution & the bible in order to subjugate us all to his will with a false terrorist attack upon NYC, Washington D.C. & Pennsylvania is the most heinous act of true terrorism that I have personally ever witnessed in my existence.

And yet so many of you still think that it was planned out by Osama Bin Laden when he expressly stated that he had nothing to do with it three days after it occurred. No, I don't think Bin Laden is guiltless for a number of atrocities, but he none the less made an excellent target to point the blame towards to take the eyes of our country away from the real murderers, the United States Federal Government. And all that Bush needs to do to keep himself in power is to stage some kind of national emergency to negate the elections in November, thereby keeping himself in power for another four years at the very least.

Bush may not be the "Antichrist", be he is surely of the same ilk.

Dear  Mark,
Thank you  for attempting to clear up the nonsense that some twisted soul  posted about Senator Obama. Unfortunately, our fellow believers have been among the most vicious in attitude toward Barack Obama.  I really suspect that racist attitudes lie behind much of the scripture twisting and dribble that many of them have posted.

My heart ached as I read their nonsense and I could not help but recall that when the Savior walked this earth, the religious folks called Him every dirty rotten name they could muster up in their religious minds. One day, we will all stand before the Bema Seat and give an account for the evil intents of our hearts in our actions and attitudes towards other  humans -  regardless of their religious persuasions. Has God stopped the sun from shining on Hindus or  Buddishts?  You are every bit the vipers that Jesus called the religious folks of His day! Shame on you ! And we wonder why we cannot get folks to come to saving faith in Christ Jesus! I wonder where some of you pharisees will stand on that day!

Obama claims to be a Christian, and who are you to say he is not? The Bible has one thing to say about haters in the church : " Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness."  1 John 2:9

By the way, I am an Evangelical Pastor.

Thank you, Pennsylvania Pastor. The more I deal with people through the years the more I truly see them as children. Are childish egocentric thinking and feeling is at the heart of all our problems. Our Jesus knew this, and He still said, "You must become as children if you want to enter into the Kingdom of God."

Bless the children, O Lord. Forgive them, for they know not what they do.

Yes! Yes! YES! Obama IS the antichrist! He fits all the available criteria! Go back to the 1950s when IBM and the DOH computers started to compute and crunch all the available data. Including the BORV historical data. It says nothing about a 40-ish person... OR a Muslim individual. But, the way it describes a person who would willfully tax low-income citizens, tax large corporations, and try to bring about almost-immediate end to New World government change is very scary! If Barrack HUSSEIN Obama is NOT the AntiChrist, then Bill Clinton definitely did not have sex with that woman! But he did, apparently, get a piece of John Edward's filmmaker honey, Reille Hunter.

This article's responses are quite entertaing but sad. I didn't know that so many people were so judgemental. I guess we are not allowed to have an opinion anymore. I was taught that it is okay to disagree, but we don't have to be mean and call each other names like 'idiots'. After all we all have a mind to make our own decisions and that doesn't mean that everyone will or has to agree.

Wow. First of all the idea of an Antichrist is a man-made fallacy - it is not in the scrolls that were the basis for the Bible and I'm not even sure it's in the Bible. You can put as much stock in the idea as those of Nostradamus - man-made rhetoric of world ending/cleansing events. Instead of reading the Bible, how about you read the history of the Bible - you might gain some perspective on the fidelity of the book itself. I agree that religion knows no party - it just so happens that Christian Conservatives latched on to the Republican/Conservative party because of ideological similarities. The truth is "true" Republicans are simply fiscal conservatives not social conservatives (i.e religious zealots). Anyway I can tell the average intelligence in here is on par with Muslim scholars who refuse to acknowledge anything but the Qur'an. If you destroy the world it will be due to your ignorance, intellectual retardation and group-think psychosis, not God of any derivation. Also, in a bit of a tangent - I really wish the South had seceded in the Civil War. I'll let you figure out what I mean by that.
