In just a few months we will have the privilege and opportunity to elect new leaders for our nation. Below are some thoughts worth keeping in mind.
* Never forget to be thankful for this privilege. God has blessed us with a democratic form of government. Over a million Americans have died defending that right and preserving it for us. Thus it is doubly sacred.
* Never neglect or take our freedom to choose our leaders for granted. There are nations in our world who were once democracies but are now ruled by tyrants. It could happen to us if we neglect our privilege. Your vote can help to put a good candidate in and keep a bad one out.
* Always remember the ugly nature of partisan politics. Often the "basest of men" and women present themselves as candidates for office. It is often the case that professional politicians and their operatives are quite willing to stoop to lies, tricks and deception to win the prize they seek.
* Therefore, "Let no man deceive you." Beware of the cleverly designed propaganda that is used to destroy the opposition and paint a flattering portrait of their candidate. "By their smooth and fair speech they beguile the hearts of the innocent."
* Pay little attention to the pre-election, campaign promises the politician makes. They are often used like the bait that hides the fisherman's hook. Rarely are those promises fulfilled.
* Don't hesitate to vote for individuals who share our Christian values and have demonstrated them in prior conduct. Be assured that those who are atheists, secularists, hedonists, socialists are voting for the person who shares their values.
* Vote for candidates who have shown themselves to be loyal to the traditions and principles of our nation. We have a worthy heritage that must be preserved for our children and grandchildren.
* Be concerned about a candidates' "world view." There is a Christian world view. The secularist has a world view and so does the hedonist. There is the world view of socialism and that of America's founders. Our world view recognizes God as the supreme power. It honors his moral code. It places a high value on the individual's freedom to live a law-abiding life and serve God without fear or oppression.
* Look for candidates who share our Christian values on such issues as abortion, protection of heterosexual marriage, protection of children from abuse, appropriate punishment for murderers, freedom of religion and speech, rights of families to raise and educate their children according to their value system. We need leaders who will protect us from those activists who would try to force us to accept and endorse their anti-Christian conduct. We need leaders who recognize and respect the Christian foundations of our Western Civilization and nation.
* Look at the kind of people with whom a candidate surrounds him or herself. One whose friends and advisors are crooked, dishonest people, are not likely to be honest and respectable public servants.
* Consider the candidate's source of campaign funds. If he or she is financed by people who are crooked, dishonest or unpatriotic, chances are good that influence will rub off on the candidate's conduct in office.
* Remember that parties and politicians are always evolving; some from bad to better, others from good to bad. This being true, we cannot assume that because a party was good in our parent's day, that it is still the best for us. The politician that started out an honest man might have been corrupted over time. Voting decisions should be made on recent evaluations.
* Don't let the news media chose your candidate for you. With few exceptions those who work in the media are very political and very one-sided in their loyalty. They like to tell us who should be elected. Their views may or not be ours.
* It is rare that we find a candidate whose views we totally agree with. In an election we are often forced to choose between the lesser of two evils. Ask yourself, which of these two is likely to do the least harm.
* Of all candidates always be skeptical. Politics is more about power than about service. In politics, advancing self and party nearly always take precedence over "right" and the welfare of the nation.
* If we choose not to vote we allow the bad guys to win the election by default and then we suffer the consequences. So pray for God's guidance and that His will be done here as in heaven and then cast your vote.
