The Louvre is probably the greatest art museum on earth. Every year, various foreign and local guests tour the highly sophisticated museum. The most treasured masterpieces which are beyond monetary value are well kept and protected here. Designed by Pierre Lescot, this large building was actually intended to be used as King Philipp II's seat of power. The Louvre's beginnings date back to the French Revolution. As an old Royal Palace of an illustrious King, The Louvre is a perfect example of traditional French Architecture.

At first, the Louvre housed the masterpieces of the famous and one of the greatest artists in history, Leonardo da Vinci. In addition, it also kept the works of Andrea del Sarto, another popular painter who is also an Italian like da Vinci. In time, more and more works of art from various artists were put in the Louvre, which prompted the authorities to make renovations and extensions of the museum. At present, the museum has the most extensive collections of precious and priceless masterpieces and keeps its stature as one of the best and most secured art museums in the world. An interesting thing about the Louvre is that it now houses artwork donations or gifts from citizens.

The Louvre lends some it's most sought after works to other institutions and agencies throughout the world. These institutions then give people the chance to have an actual glimpse of these celebrated masterpieces. Such an activity is a highly commendable practice in the sense that it opens and widens the minds of people from various parts of the planet especially the young ones. The satisfaction one gets from viewing these beautiful works is something that cannot be traded for anything in this world.

The Louvre protects and keeps the legacies of French culture for the generations to come. Artifacts that date back to the earliest years of French history and art works of the recent times are being secured in the museum. French officials have revealed a plan to establish a museum in Abu Dhabi which will also carry the same name. In making such a step, French culture will even more be made accessible to this side of the world thus, paving the way for better understanding among cultures. Once the Louvre in Abu Dhabi opens, many of the masterpieces in Paris will be shown there.

A favorite feature of the Louvre is the glass pyramid located at the museum's main entrance. Upon entering, the visitors are treated to this spectacular design that is unique and magnificent in every way. It is interesting to note that the architect of this glass pyramid is not French. Chinese-American I.M. Pei was commissioned by French President Francois Mitterand to design this awesome and beautiful pyramid.

Some of the most famous works of art in the world can be found in the Louvre. These masterpieces include Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, The Virgin and Child with St. Anne, Madonna of the Rocks, Jacques Louis David's Oath of the Horatii, Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People and Alexandros of Antioch's Venus de Milo.
