"Faith moves mountains, but you have to keep pushing while you are praying." Mason Cooley
On July 4, 1776, this country, the nascent United States, claimed its independence from Britain. The umbilical cord to the Motherland was finally cut. We felt confident enough and at that time strong enough as a nation and a people to venture forth into the world on our own in spite of the many doubts and concerns and fears prevalent at that time.
The bonds of our previous political commitment to the Empire and the shackles of our economic dependency to that reigning monarchy were cast off and a new era began. Democracy was born. On that very historic day freedom literally took in its first deep and invigorating breath of life.
Each year on this very special day Americans commemorate and celebrate the historical impact of this day in their own way. Picnics. Family gatherings. Fireworks. Prayer. Outdoor celebrations of every shape and size. Americans are a diverse people. They are hard working, God fearing and optimistic about their future and their country's future.
There are many concerns these days that might dampen the happiness of the July 4th festivities. Higher gas prices. Uncertainty in the stock market. High unemployment rates. The conflict in the Middle East. Family members in the military being overseas doing their duty to preserve democracy and freedoms for other people. These variables could rain on anyone's parade and spoil the moment.
Americans deep down are fighters and dreamers and believers in causes worth pursuing. We are a people dedicated to change and refuse to accept the status quo. When the going gets tough we get our creative juices flowing. We are solution oriented and able to tolerate momentary glitches in our lives no matter how challenging the situation might turn out to be.
But remember that solutions to problems need to be pursued. Praying for a solution gives a person comfort and a degree of peace. Solutions to problems and situations in our lives require a dogged pursuit to an answer. Some solutions are more challenging than others and necessarily require a united effort by us all. Americans try not to point fingers and find scape goats to their problems. We actively search for the best ways and means to solve those issues that may hold us back as a people and a nation.
Happy Birthday to you America! Your people are your most valuable assets.
