We've all had it at one time or another, some of us more than others, that bloating, cramping, discomfort that comes with constipation. Because of my wife's diabetic gastroperisis I have watched her suffer more than any one individual should ever have to from the problems associated with constipation. At it's worse, constipation can cause head aches, nausea and vomiting. In a severe case hospitalization may be required, as my wife and I have unfortunately discovered.
So, is there anything that can be done to prevent and relieve constipation? You betcha!
Probably the most important thing to remember for the prevention of constipation is to maintain a healthy diet. This of course means... lots of fiber, and cutting back on the salt and processed foods.
Fiber can be obtained from beans, grains, fruits and vegetables. Once included in a healthy diet fiber will keep your bowels moving. Some of the foods you can eat that will help prevent constipation include: apples, berries, brown rice, bulgur, coffee, currants, figs, honey, prunes, raisins, rhubarb and wheat.
But, what can you do when it is too late and the constipation has already become a problem? Here are some simple suggestions:
Licorice root: This is a natural antiinflammatory that can help relieve irritation and discomfort in your bowels.
Peppermint: This herb is great for helping to stimulate elimination. It can be taken in capsule form.
Psyllium: This high fiber seed is included in many laxative products and can be bought over the counter inexpensively.
Watermelon: This tasty treat has been renown for its ability to get things going. Don't hesitate to use it when you can.
Cherries: These sweet fruit have historically been as popular, if not more, than watermelon.
Herbal Slimming Tea: So, what do you do when all the above mentioned remedies fail? My wife and I have discovered through trial and error that slimming tea can work very effectively to clear out the problem and get you going again. We use 21st Century Herbal Slimming Tea from Rite Aid. It is very inexpensive. Generally, when necessary, a cup of hot tea, taken at bed time should have you as good as new by morning. If you take it during the day it could kick in at the most inconvenient time and interrupt with your schedule. But, if this is not a problem for you then don't hesitate to use it.
As with all health issues, if your constipation is chronic, please consult your physician. I hope this information is helpful to you and brings you as much relief as it has brought my wife and I.
