Well, I guess the gunpowder dust of the fireworks have dissipated, the out door grills have been cleaned off and, if we are in the middle class elite, we've driven our cars home at the cost of 40 plus dollars.

But it is Saturday! Do we go to Church? Twice on a weekend? There are too many obligations and things going on that have to be done and it's the holiday weekend! Well, can we at least look at the readings! What does the Saturday morning reading have to say to us?

First, as we return to our busy lives, we should continue to pray for our country. We are still haunted by multiple threats: inflation, terrorism, uncertainty and family problems— You name it and we have it !

That's life!

Tomorow's Saturday Mass Gospel talks about:

"People do not put new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. Rather, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved." Matthew 9, vs.16, 17

Can those old fashion Biblical images speak to us? What is old and what is new? What is the Holy Spirit saying to us here.   Have you any ideas?

Does Politics say that we must change or should we return to our old traditions which can be spiritually forever new!  i.e .: Fidelity versus Infidelity—Discipline versus Dissipation—Abstinence versus Contraception—Right versus Wrong—Generosity versus selfishness….

These qualities can be uniquely innovative for the new wine and the new skins. Do you agree with me or am I getting too old!
