Do you plan ahead? Do you set yourself targets and goals? Are you aware of the importance of setting yourself short and longer term goals? I am not really sure how each of the readers of this article will have answered these questions. The simple fact of the matter is people who do set themselves future goals will without doubt be more successful than people who do not and in this article I will explain why this is.
Around ten years ago a famous company commissioned a survey which was based around this subject of setting targets and goals. One hundred students, who had just completed their studies and who therefore were about to enter into the world of work, were asked the following question:
"Where will you be and what will you be doing in five years time?"
There was a mixed return of answers as one might expect. A number of students were either too immature or were not completing the survey in a serious manner and wrote answers such as:
"I do not care."
This was something which the group who were asked to organise the survey were expecting. In the end out of the one hundred students who took part in the survey only seven of them gave what was considered to be a full and thought out five year goal.
Five years later the one hundred people were contacted and asked to answer a further serious of questions. There was quite an amazing end result to all of this work in that the total net worth of the seven people who had had a goal was worth more than the ninety three added together.
The results and findings of this survey have been included in many a motivational speech and was something that I thought would be of interest to the readers of my articles.
