On June 17th, 2008, California legalized same sex marriage. Only three days later, on June 20th, lightning storms ignited more than 1,400 fires throughout the state. As of this writing there are over 1,700 infernos all across the state that have burned down well over half a million acres of forest land. The current situation is certainly a catastrophe of Biblical proportions. The strange thing is California's fire season doesn't even normally begin until late summer.

Is there a relationship between the commencement of same sex marriages and the fires that are burning down the state of California? Is it possible that God has sent down judgment from heaven and that He is trying to get the attention of an unrepentant people?

I realize that this article is not going to be very popular with some people. But, according to the Bible homosexuality is an abomination to the Lord. God has punished such behavior in the past and I believe that He will continue to do so until the return of Christ.

You may remember the story of Sodom and Gomorrah from the 18th and 19th chapters of Genesis in the Bible. The account tells us that God was displeased with the people of Sodom and Gomorrah because their sins were grievous. What sins were grievous to the Lord? Well, chapter 19 gives us an account of men that were inflamed with lust to have sex with other men. The last time I checked this was called homosexuality. The consequences were that God sent down fire and brimstone and destroyed the cities.

This is what the Bible says of the event: "Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah-from the LORD out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities-and also the vegetation in the land." (Genesis 19:24-25)

"Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the LORD. He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace." (Genesis 19:27-28)

This morning when I got up to go to church, the skies of Central California were still filled with smoke from the fires across the state. It is a dark gray haze that irritates the eyes and scratches the throat and nose. Numerous people have been complaining about respiratory problems and headaches. Sadly, people have died, homes have been destroyed and vegetation has been wiped out. Shadows of Sodom and Gomorrah?

But, why would God judge something that seems as "harmless" (as some people might say) as a loving relationship between two people who just happen to be of the same gender?

Well, I suppose we could question God's judgment on some things, but it would seem that He did a pretty good job of making a wonderfully beautiful universe filled with, light and dark, good and evil, right and wrong. It just so happens that God decided that the universe should function according to certain predetermined rules. We refer to these rules as the "laws" of nature. One of those "laws" was that there would be genders of male and female to procreate.

Now homosexuals will tell you that there is nothing wrong with their behavior. And I would imagine that they are sincere in their belief. But, that doesn't make it right according to God's plans for His creation. In order, perhaps, to justify their behavior homosexuals have said that they can't help themselves... that they were "born" that way. So, they use "science" to legitimize their behavior.

Do you see what is happening here? They are shifting the blame. Their sexual preference is not their fault. God made them that way. God made a mistake.

God made a mistake?

Well let me see... how is sodomy scientifically correct? Hmmm... its not.

Whenever man defies the perfect order of God's creation there are consequences. When the balance of the universe is broken, it must be rebalanced. When harmony in nature is disrupted it must be corrected. When creatures defy their Creator they bring harm upon themselves.

The Apostle Paul reveals God's position on homosexuality very clearly in the First Chapter of Romans. This is what he says:

18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen.

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

28Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

So you see, in our disobedience and rebellion against God we bring punishment against ourselves. The same is true with homosexuality. We have seen it with AIDS. Have you ever wondered why AIDS so ravaged the homosexual community? We saw it in New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina. Were you aware that New Orleans had planned a gay parade to include tens of thousands of people in the streets before Hurricane Katrina hit?

And now... we have seen it in California. The people of America are so smart and so well educated. But why can't they connect the dots? (Proclaiming themselves to be wise they became fools) Why can't they see the hand of God in these catastrophes? Could it be they've got... smoke in their eyes?

The neat thing about God is that He patiently waits for us. He tries to get our attention over and over again. So very often we are like children to whom the Father says, "Don't run out in the street." But, we run out in the street. And again and again He gets us out of trouble. But, the day comes when Father can't stop us from doing the things we choose to do, when we disobey him. The consequences are then upon us.

Turn to Him while you can. He loves you and me. No matter what we've done. He is a forgiving God. When we sincerely want to change our behavior He can help! In John 10:10 Jesus said, "I came that you might have life and have it more abundantly." All we have to do is take Him at His word.

Yes, Mark, I agree that homosexuality is a sin and gay marriage is an even bigger disgrace. California's high court should be ashamed of itself for making such a ruling. However, rest assured that there was absolutely no relationship between that disgusting decision and the wildfires. That is not how God operates.

Mark, I joined your fan club and will read the article you recommended. I invite you and other readers to read my article entitled, "Are Natural Disasters Punishment for Wicked Living?". It's not a long article (about 450 words), but it will shed some light on the subject you brought up. I can't put the link here, but you can find it by doing a Google seach on the title.

Hi Mark, this a very well laid out article. You are right, many will not like it, but the truth hurts. God gives us so many chances to repent and spare us the pain of our sinful choices, but as He is not a forceful God, he will eventually leave us alone. The sad part is then they say things like, "if there really was a God.." Our whole country is in termoil because of sin. And not just homosexuality, but all kinds of depravity. Just today in church, we talked about how far we have fallen away from Godly precepts as a nation and even worse, the church doesn't even believe in the word of God anymore. It's just to convenient to throw it out. But then again, that is what Timothy and Peter warned us about so long ago. We do serve a gracious and forgiving God, but we must remember, He said go, and sin no more. We cannot be a people that can continually trample on the grace of God and expect to get away with it. Keep sharing. God bless!

Incidentally, regarding the "religious fundamentalist arsonists"... I believe Nero tried that argument almost 2000 years ago. If I remember correctly, things didn't turn out too well with him in the end. He ended up killing himself.

Believing that the words of bronze age goat herders are the words of god and then using them to sow bigotry is just plain evil. Seems inconsistent with the Christian concept of a benevolent god, but when you're dealing in fantasy its easy to get confused. May humanity one day find a place in your empty heart.

The Bible has proven itself to be what is perhaps the most accurately translated manuscript of antiquity and is quite worthy of our investigation. That "ignorant" goat herders could produce such a monumental masterpiece of writing defies modern concepts of the intelligence of "bronze age" people and how the minds and hearts of men operated in the past. Indeed, it should be quite evident that our so called "scientific" age has in many ways lost touch with reality and mankind's place in this world and in the universe. If some people want to believe that they are related to worms and rats... so be it. I am convinced that our benevolent God created us and established rules for living for our own welfare. Sodomy is anatomically incorrect and a "fantasy" of true affection. As for my heart... it once was cold and calculating, Darwin was my prophet and Timothy Leary my high priest, sex drugs and rock and roll ruled my mind and heart. There was never a greater hedonist than myself. However, when I encountered the Infinite, when I was touched by the Creator of Heaven and Earth, a transformation of my values, beliefs and paradigm of reality could not help but emerge. My empty heart has been filled with the love and life of a God that some refuse to accept. I have nothing to be ashamed about or apologize for. Thank you for your comments and may God truly bless you.

An accurate translation does not make the words of the source document true or holy.  They are merely stories that reflect the morality of the times in which they were written, nothing more.  One of my favorites is when Elisha cursed (in the name of the Lord) the children that were teasing him.  God then sent the 2 she bears to rip apart 42 children.  Nice story!  I'm not sure of the moral but it seems meant to scare one into believing.  Don't fool with one of god's prophets or else!

I doubt that you were touched by the creator, rather its more likely that a flashback from your Timothy Leary days paid you a visit.

I didn't ask you to apologize, but I do think that you should be ashamed for your gross intolerance of the gays as well as your proclamation that god is punishing California. However this is probably just the tip of the iceberg.

Are you also anti-semetic?  Will all those of other faiths (or no faith) burn forever in hell?  Would you choose the will of your god over the welfare of your children?  Would you rather have poor people in 3rd world countries contract disease than have protected sex?

Rick, We could banter back and forth forever about translations, interpretations and applications of Scripture. However, the facts remain the same. I am not the Creator, I did not make the rules, I only seek to abide by them to the best of my ability. I am far from perfect. Some people that I dearly love have chosen the gay lifestyle. But, that does not change the point. I am not the one who judges, I am only a messenger. If you have a problem with what the Bible says then you need to take that up with God.  I am not anti-semtic, I believe God's mercy shall be extended to far more people than the Christian theologians may be willing to believe. God judges the heart, as well as the behavior of the individual. I have children that are suffering as a result of their disobedience to the commandments of the Lord. I am not the one that is punishing them. We bring punishment upon ourselves when we step outside of God's perfect will for our lives. Yes, I do care about the welfare of my children, and the thought of them being sodomized is not a pleasant thought.  I pray that the Lord will soften your heart to His purpose and meaning for your life.

Mark, You are brave to say the things you said in today's climate of PC, tolerence and diversity. Yes, some love to hear this stuff and others will have a good laugh or become indignant. It is a time for these things to be said because if we don't our own level of resposibility rises. It is like walking on eggs. We hate seeing the nation go this way and it would be so much easier to just ignore it all and keep quiet. Yet, anyone who loves God and people knows we cannot be silent.

Bless your work my friend, your writing is very good and your message is both timely and desperately needed.

I don't know. I haven't been keeping up with the political scene in Iowa. But, we must remember that the entire nation can receive the consequences of the unrighteous decisions of its leaders. Our continued war in Iraq and Afghanistan, for example, could have huge ramifications upon us as an entire nation. Selling weapons to Iran... it could be any number of things.

Thanks Mark for boldly speaking as God's ambassator. As I was reading this article, I realized you that you would receive derogatory comments as a result. It has become a common doctrine these days to say that God does nothing detrimental to humananity. They say that He only allows it. While this may be true in part concerning His children, it is not true for the world as a whole. Perhaps they have overlooked scriptures such as Genesis 6:17 and Psalms 119:19-22. Why do they teach that God will reward His children in this age and the age to come and yet they teach that God does not reward the world justly for what they have sown in this age as well. I know our God is righteous and His reghteousness is poured out equally in His perfect justice. You are right to say God has done this thing in CA for God has not prohibited the theif from stealing, killing, or destroying those who are not His sheep.

Thank you, Pastor Richards, for your very insightful comments. It is sad that our great nation no longer seems to perceive the correlation between our blessings and our relationship with God. It is true, that we want the blessings and we want to take all the credit for the good that comes our way. But, don't blame us when disaster strikes. Hmmm

Mark, I applaud you for being open to receive the wrath of opposition this article would no doubt bring upon you. For Jesus Christ, I am willing to suffer, too. Many do things in the name of Jesus Christ and must give an account of their own actions and deeds. I believe homosexuality is a sin because it clearly states it in the Bible. I do not believe ministering to homosexuals as God would is sinful. It seems Christians do and say things that sound hateful and represent God in a hateful manner instead of a loving manner. Many are called to the ministry just to minster to this unnatural affection between same sex. The Lord will equip those He calls to do this. I do not have that calling on my life and those who do, handle it in a loving way. I am not saying speaking the truth isn't loving. I do not think just because He will not use water this time (day of judgment) but fire that the fires in CA were/are a sneak preview of what is to come. And if you read my comment in Terry Mitchell's article about this, you'll find other reasons why I believe as I do. I won't be redundant and repeat them.

I rate/read articles not because I agree with what is said, I read them because the title caught my attention. I enjoy reading and knowing how others think. I don't know so many things or have the answer to the "why" questions. But I know Jesus was born of a virgin; He was crucified; He rose again on the third day; He ascended to His Father; and He will return. I believe we must be born again and the only way to the Father is through the Son. He will judge and we have a choice where we will spend eternity. We can burn forever and ever, eternally. Or we can live to praise, rule and reign, forever and ever, eternally with the Father. I chose and pray may others will choose wisely.

If there is a God, I can't imagine he'd be approving or proud of the behavior of organized religion in this country. I am not a believer or non-believer, I simply don't know and just try to live my life in a way that I think is moral.

The day I start making spiritual conjectures about a tragedy such as these fires being punishment from God to a people I don't like or understand is the day I start worrying about my fate in the afterlife, if there is one.

I thought your article was very well written. I can not think of a better example of a human law that is in direct conflict of a law from God. I realize that some people will not see this as the equivalent of a law allowing murder, or one allowing
people to steal from you, but it is the same thing. Good for you taking a stand, I pray that God blesses you greatly. I have an idea he already has, as in a great job, beautiful wife, good friends etc.
