Both laughter and breaking wind involve sound and expiration of gases yet laughter is somewhat more popular than breaking wind. Hardly surprising really ;)

So why do we laugh and what do we find funny?

This question was posed on a science forum a while ago, so I did some research and found out the following:

Gelotology is the study of why we laugh with regards to our survival/health etc. See source link below:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelotology

From the link you can see that laughter is shown to be VERY beneficial for all aspects of our health.  It reduces stress levels, improves our immune system and IS contagious!

Meanwhile with regard to the science of what we find funny I found this source:

http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/scilaugh.html

The above source says this:

"Although we do laugh at jokes and funny movies, 80% of our laughter occurs during everyday comments in everyday social situations. Robert Provine, a neurobiologist who studies laughter, with help from three graduate students, went to places such as shopping malls and eavesdropped on more than 1200 conversations.

They noted who was speaking, who was listening, who laughed and when, and whether the speaker and listeners were female or male. They found that the person speaking laughed 46% more than the listeners and that women laughed more often than men. Furthermore, the response to the speaker depended on the speaker's gender. People, whether male or female, laughed more readily in response to a male speaker. The researchers also observed that laughter rarely interrupted speech. Instead, laughter came at the end of a phrase, much as punctuation follows a written sentence."

However the MOST intriguing fact with regards to laughter is this one:

"Babies who are born blind and deaf can laugh, so the ability to see or hear is not required for laughter."

So laughter is innate and not a learned behaviour, which indicates that laughter is VERY necessary for our success as a species and individual survival.

What do I find funny?

I find that my children make me laugh more than anyone else.
Looking at this from a survival point of view I can see how this could be by 'design' rather than some bias I have towards to my own children.

Many stress situations are alleviated by laughter, I find their grumpy faces particularly funny. My laughter causes them to relax their features (as laughter is now proven to be contagious) and they laugh. Thus, rather than both of us being stressed, the situation is immediately alleviated via laughter a simple facial and vocal expression.

How can we use laughter to benefit our lives?

I am not suggesting you go around laughing at angry people, as an ingenuous laugh will likely have the opposite effect. I did though find as a child, that joking around and making bullies laugh saved me from a few scraps and most comedians will tell you this is how they started out, being the class joker to avoid bullying.

The MOST successful business people in the world who started with nothing have great smiles and can woo pretty much anyone. Consider Richard Branson's wide smile, and Donald Trump is often seen laughing and smiling during interviews. Whereas celebs who get a lot of criticism smile very little when interviewed. I often put ex UK PrimeministerTony Blair's success down his smile rather than his ability to lead.

So, if you want to be a success in life, develop your laugh and smile.

Well CB, I am not a good laugh er. If someone tells me a joke I may respond with a quick outburst. However laughing hardily I can't do. Not because I don't want to laugh, I just can't by nature.

Hi David, I have read previously that one can induce feelings of happiness by forcing yourself to smile and faking/forcing laughter. I am not sure how well this works, but if laughter does indeed result in 'happy' chemicals being released etc, then it just may work!

I agree, but both are stress relieving in their own way. I shall Google crying and see what the benefits of that are, but yes I agree, laughter is preferable and sometimes we can even laugh between the tears.

Thanks Sue, you might recall the film Robin Williams made a few years ago about a Doctor who championed laughter therapy, Patch Adams, very inspirational film.

I enjoyed this film immensely, CB! I'm a fan of Pablo Neruda's work and when one of his poems was used in the film, I knew it was a winner! Also a true story and very inspiring, I agree.

"So, if you want to be a success in life, develop your laugh and smile." CB, I'm an overwhelming success based on that statement! Really enjoyed this article and agree with you. I was sharing with one of my sisters on Monday, how I had someone in customer service from my mobile carrier, cracking up with laughter. I didn't intend to, it just happened. I was pushing the screen with a fingernail on a new phone and nothing was happening. Well, nothing ever would as it's not that type of phone. (My Palm Treo has me spoiled.) I thought she'd left the line but she was busy trying to collect herself. She was laughing hysterically and thanked me for ringing in. She said she was happy she got my call. She and I had such a fun time. I accidentally hung up on her twice! I could tell she enjoyed the laugh and it made me feel great inside to have given her this release. (You had to have been there, I guess.) But, I do understand this article. Laughter and smiles are part of my charm, I'm told. A smile defines me and has my entire life. When I'm not smiling, others know something is not quite proper with me. I have an outrageous and no doubt whacky sense of humour. I'm careful of offending others because of it. Great article!

Great reply Avis :) I hope others read it and realise the power of smiling! Smile when asking your boss for a payrise for example...and better still, ask when he/she is smiling! Then you know they are in a good mood already ;)

Here's a story of how humor saved me a great deal of pain one time.
I was having what was to be the second of three operations carried out on the same day. The second was without a general anaesthetic as I had eaten after the first operation and no further surgery was expected. I closed my eyes and visualised a memory of my children doing something that always made me laugh and I replayed that image over and over in my mind. I don't recall any pain from that operation only the memory of my children playing.

Great article. I have said many times that I love to laugh and I will always firmly believe that laughter is good for everyone. The hardest thing we have to learn is to laugh at ourselves and once we accomplish that, we should be much happy all around.

Sandra.

I had a good laugh at myself once after wondering if I'd been visited by angels as there were white fluffy feathers on my lounge floor. Only to realise later that my daughter had her fairy wings out which I'd made years earlier with goose feathers.
