Bikers are a highly diverse group and most tend to be independent.  Most resent being told what to do.  Freedom is the natural right of everyone (even though not all can enjoy freedom) and should be fought for and preserved at all times.  It is one of the most alluring and wonderful feelings.  The feel of the open road and the wind in your face, the feeling of unbound freedom and the relaxing and almost therapeutic calming of the mind and spirit when riding a motorcycle is difficult to describe to a non-biker.  Most everyone understands riding a motorcycle is dangerous, and for some that is part of the thrill.  Any true biker takes many careful precautions on the road.  The condition of your motorcycle and the choices of quality protective gear all play a crucial role in keeping you safe on the road.

Motorcycle protective clothing and gear is ALL about your life.  Not only is it designed to keep you warm and dry in cold or rainy weather  but, also to provide as much protection as is possible when you go down.  Safety and protection is the first and most important concern when choosing your motorcycle gear.  Style is not to be over looked!  A biker's individual and unique personality, preferences and desired look can easily be satisfied with the many different styles, designs and colors available today in quality protective motorcycle apparel and gear.

Today's market place offers countless sources for motorcycle protective apparel and gear.  All of the brands and products on the market today are not high quality and all do not provide the protection you need and desire.  Your budget does not have to afford the high end brands or logoed products in order to have the highest quality protective gear available.  There are those manufacturers of high quality, reputable products that can be purchased at affordable and even discounted prices.

What is the single most important safety device a motorcyclist can have and how do you choose the right one?  A quality, well constructed, comfortable fitting helmet, a motorcycle jacket made of high quality cowhide or buffalo leather, quality leather chaps, goggles, sturdy motorcycle boots with non-slip sole, and motorcycle gloves are the most common items found on a biker's list of protective motorcycle gear.   The style and type of protective gear needed would depend on the type of riding you will be doing, coupled with personal preference.

Consider that head injury is the leading cause of deaths in motorcycle crashes, 40% of impact injuries happen to the face area of the helmet, un-helmeted motorcyclists are about 32 times as likely as passenger car occupants to die in a traffic crash and approximately 6 times as likely to be injured.  Helmets are about 29% effective in preventing crash fatalities and are 70% effective in preventing brain injuries.

When choosing your helmet, consider that a full face helmet provides the maximum protection needed because only a full face helmet can protect your chin, teeth and jawbone.  Whatever your choice in style of helmets, make sure that any helmet you buy meets or exceeds the D.O.T.  specifications and carries a D.O.T. sticker.  Purchasing a helmet without the D.O.T. certification because of style preference or even as a lesser price to pay is not the wisest choice.   Acquiring a ticket, when going through a check point is far more costly than paying a few dollars more for a genuinely protective helmet.  Considering the long- term effects and pain (not to mention the cost of medical bills) in the event of a head injury clearly define the obvious and wisest choice.

Being independent is in most cases an admirable quality.  Being resentful of the helmet laws is understandable to some degree.  Taking care to protect yourself and those you love to the best of your ability is not only just plain smart, it commands respect.

Some of the reasoning against wearing a helmet include:  "helmets are too hot,"  "the open face and full face helmet blocks my side vision," "helmets look ridiculous" and "bugs get caught in my open face helmet."  Today's well designed quality helmets provide great comfort features such as great air ventilation, super aerodynamic design, anti-fogging features, wider eye ports, and light weight construction  allowing comfort and better fit in a wide range of fantastic colors and designs  just to mention a few.

There are a few highly respected names in the motorcycle helmet market that manufacture a wide range of popular styles and designs.  These helmets are not only beautiful, light weight and comfortable, but are top of the line for ventilation, aerodynamics, are D.O.T. certified and well known for having very little road noise.  Many are sold at affordable prices and can sometimes be found at discount prices!
