Although chiropractors do not claim to treat any disease directly, the horrible symptoms associated with fibromyalgia can be helped with conservative chiropractic care. Chiropractics can alleviate the pain associated with fibromyalgia, and also work to prevent it in the future. Those who discover chiropractic, discover a gentle yet effective approach to health care, and it accomplishes its goals without the use of potentially harmful medications or surgical procedures.
Signs and symptoms of fibromyalgia
Individuals dealing with fibromyalgia may experience fatigue, along with gnawing or burning pain to their tendons and joints. Tender spots often called trigger points on the neck, shoulders, chest, rib cage, lower back, thighs, knees, elbows and buttocks may become extra sensitive. There may also be associated sensitivity to pain, heat, cold, touch, and even bright lights.
Fibromyalgia may be associated with the following:
1. Sleeplessness
2. Irritable bowel syndrome
3. Headaches
4. Bladder problems/urination problems
5. Depression
6. Anxiety
The pain resulting from fibromyalgia, also referred to as fibromyositis or myofascial pain syndrome, can be very debilitating. For some, the problems can be even worse because it may leave them unable to function on a daily basis.
Fibromyalgia mainly affects women, although men can be affected as well. The cause is not known, but research indicates its incidence is growing in the United States .
People suffering from Fibromyalgia have three options:
1. The Medical Approach. Drugs used in the medical approach include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, painkillers, and antidepressants. Unfortunately, they only mask problems, and at best, provide temporary relief.
2. Non - Medical Approaches. Exercise, especially aerobic exercise, can help in relieving pain and allowing individuals to return to everyday functions of life. Low impact activities such as walking and swimming can be helpful. Acupressure, acupuncture, and relaxation techniques have also shown to be helpful.
3. Chiropractic Approach. Chiropractors correct subluxations of specific spinal units therefore releasing the pressure off the nerve and reducing inflammation. Combined with proper exercise, nutrition, rest and a positive mental outlook, chiropractic can make a huge difference in someone's life that is suffering from fibromyalgia.
Vertebral subluxations are the result of a vertebrae that has gone out of place and did not correct itself. Over time the subluxation will cause the bone to wear out prematurely and cause pain and inflammation of the area. Subluxations can be caused by trauma, emotional stress, chemical insult and can be present as early as birth. The result is that stress is placed on the brain, spinal cord, nerves, joints, ligaments, muscles, internal organ, and other tissues.
Subluxations can also result in:
1. Disturbed body function.
2. Lowered resistance to disease.
3. Lack of energy.
4. Height loss.
5. Premature aging.
Even more alarming is that vertebral subluxations may not result in any pain or symptoms, yet be present for years as they damage an individual's body. Interestingly, Only 10 percent of the body's nerves are associated with feeling pain!
Only a spinal check-up by a trained chiropractor can detect and correct subluxations, allowing the body to deal with or prevent health conditions such as fibromyalgia. Doing so may be the difference of living in constant pain and disability or living life at an optimal level not only free of pain and sickness, but achieving your 100% health potential!
