Most skeptics regard the UFO phenomena as nothing more than a product of the imagination or the result of clever hoaxes and the misidentification of mundane aerial activity.

The writer and psychologist Carl Jung believed there was a psychotronic factor involved and that sightings of UFOs and reports of alleged alien abductions were actually just the result of a symbolic manifestation , somehow projected into reality from the depths of the human unconscious.

There are geophysicists that speculate that there are locations of the earth where geomagnetic anomalies such as 'earth-lights' appear that seem to be largely responsible for the misperception of alien activity.

Indeed, even many ufologists firmly believe that about 95% of all UFO sightings and reports can be explained, that most sightings are in fact the misidentification of I.F.O.'s or Identified Flying Objects such as weather balloons, satellites, stars, meteors, or even conventional or top secret military aircraft.

When I was young, I remember my first 'UFO Sighting', I had told my Aunt about it. She was one of the few people I knew whom was open minded enough to listen to my story and not dismiss it as the product of an child's overactive imagination. Perhaps it was, but none the less she theorized that there were many people whom had actually mistaken lenticular cloud formations as flying saucers but she felt that it was possible that such alien crafts had the technology and ability to disguise themselves as or hide within the clouds. She was the first person to suggest the idea and possibility of UFO camouflage to me.

Our own super technologically advanced stealth bomber planes have the ability to avoid radar detection and such aircraft as the new Stealth Blimp now have the ability to not only avoid radar but to become almost virtually invisible to the naked eye when observed from the distance. If we humans have this amazing technology just imagine what technology a more advanced alien life form may have access to.

There have been numerous sightings over the last few years where credible sources have reported seeing possible alien space crafts which they at first had thought were actually mundane aircrafts such as helicopters or commercial planes. As a result I came to the following conclusion and theory.

If satellites, Venus, swam gas, weather balloons and conventional aircraft can and sometimes are misidentified as flying saucers than it is also true that flying saucers can and probably sometimes are misidentified as conventional aircrafts, weather balloons, swamp gas, Venus and satellites.

If such a theory is true we can no longer trust exactly what we see, or think we see in our own skies.

Some of the same philosophies that support various faith beliefs may support UFO research as well...'Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.'

Great article, Steven. Makes one think. We should never totally refuse to believe there could be someone else out there. There is a God and with God, anything is possible.

You are so right, I consider myself agnostic, meaning I do not know whether there is or is not a 'Supreme Being', a 'Divine Creator' or a 'God/Goddess', and to a certain extent in my opinion personal beliefs are irrelevant BUT I do believe that keeping an open mind is the key to enlightenment. How can we see the truth if our eyes are shut? So I keep looking, I keep searching...if Archaeology is the search for facts and not truths and philosophy is the search for truth, than I seek both. Socrates said 'The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.' and I do not know, I know nothing, but like the X-Files Fox Mulder, I want to believe. I remain open to all possibilites, I can not discount anything. Obviously there are deceit and lies, so we must fall back on what is true for ourselves, sometimes what is true for one person is not true for someone else. William Shakespeare- 'This above all: to thine own self be true.'

hi steven,

this was a well written, very intersting article, and your last lines make a lot of sense. everything stems from fear. what are we humans so afraid of to think there may not be other forms of life? thanks for sharing, and i look forward to your continued writing,

best regards,

sue thom

I think you are right. I guess there is really nothing to fear but fear itself.

Your grammar structure is sound, and your article is logical and open-minded. Your idea of a UFO and my idea of ufo theory are two different things, indeed. These ubiquitous frippery obligations are things that I do not understand, perhaps you could explain those to us, here in a general public forum, to us who need to conquer our fears, who lack the subtle communication skills and spontaneous wit necessary to construct an article such as this one.

Well, thank you for the compliments. I'd like to hear your theories and discuss them, you can please send me an e-mail. I'm not sure how to translate 'ubiquitous frippery obligations'...I'm reading it as you refer to either my theory expressed here or perhaps the other theories previously posed as  'ubiquitous' = widespread 'frippery' = foolish or outdated 'obligations' = responsibilities, or  widespread and outdated duties? To be honest, I too could use a bit of support with conquering fears, in that subject I am no expert, far from it. I guess my techique is to propose a theory without interjecting my own personal beliefs, ideas and opinions as facts or truths and remaining objective, skeptical, and yet open-minded as well. I try to suggest an idea without actually reaching a definitive conclusion, leaving it up to the reader to decide for themselves a conclusion that works best for them. The idea is indeed to kindle thought. It is in this particular article however I did write a conclusion, the conclusion remains a theory however, but I think it steps outside the box and gives people a differant perspective on the issues concerning the study of the ufo phenomena. The point in this case was really not an attempt to change anyones mind on the subject but to refute those claims of hostile debunkers which constantly seek to dash the hopes of believers. If the truth is out there, than the proof can be found.

Thanks Teresa, I'm actually quite new at writing articles, so your input (and everyone elses) are all highly appreciated. Up until recently I have written mostly fiction horror, short stories and vampire novels. Writing speculation material is new for me, its the closest to writing non-fiction I've ever gotten since High-School. I think this is a great writers community, I have read so many fabulous articles on this site. Everyone keep up the great work! (and I'll try to do the same)

Good article you never really know what is out there. Just think we are still discovering new moons and stars the universe is huge so I think it is ok to have a open mind.
