Where do you find understanding? You have a need to know. Where do you get your answers?
Do you, like most, seek unobtainable answers? Where do you go?
Do you find your answers in nature? Do you find them in religion? Are you more in need of cold, hard evidence? Science possibly?
But do you know
the answer to everything lies in theory?
Theory, that according to Stephen Hawking is
never absolute? Hawking, a physicist who believes that the best
unity of knowledge theory or
string theory will help us humans know the mind of God? But can an ant keep up with a jaguar?
Where do you find your answers? Are you desperate? So desperate that you'll abscond with fact and believe out of pure need. Your answers taking precedent over and above that of logic and fact? Are your answers based more in faith, belief in things not seen?
Dr. Emoto has an answer. But your belief in that answer lies more in who you are than whether or not Emoto can prove his findings to be sound. Dr. Emoto confesses that the observation of water crystals is based on "subjective science."
Emoto's water crystal experiments consist of exposing water in glasses to different words, pictures, or music, and then freezing and examining the aesthetics of the resulting crystals with microscopic photography.
Unfortunately, there are not enough controls on his experiments and Emoto has not shown enough details of his approach to the scientific community. His experiments are not of the scientific method-- rigorously researched and experimented upon by other scientists?
Kristopher Setchfield, (BA, Health Science) from Castleton State College states " It is this crucial lack of scientific foundation that prevents Dr. Emoto's work from attracting interest by widely accepted and respected scientists at long-standing research institutions. This is unfortunate for the world if there is, after all, truth to his claims--as reproduction of his results by any scientist would lend much credence to his work. A little change in Emoto's experimental design would do great things for the credibility of his claims. I recommend the following to ground his work in sound scientific principle:
- Eliminate the possibility of the scientist's bias affecting the experiment's results by implementing double blind procedures.
- Publish the entire collection of photos for all water sample tests that he has performed, not just the ones that support his claim.
- Minimize the sources of possible error in his procedures, such as variation in temperature and humidity between sample.
- Pay more attention to the time-tested methods of the scientific community rather than disregarding them. Emoto's research could go much farther if he could interest scientists around the world in testing his hypothesis.
After the lengthy review of Emoto's research methods and results, I have come to believe that Dr. Emoto is offering pseudoscience to the masses in the guise of defensible research. Only time and review by others will tell if there is any truth at the heart of Mr. Emoto's claims, as Emoto himself thoroughly believes in his findings but does not value the scientific method or community. What is truly fearsome is the great numbers of people that accept his words as proven facts without looking deeper to find out if his claims are truly justified. While I respect Dr. Emoto's desire to save the Earth's water from contamination and pollution, unless he can produce a scientific paper and get it published in a scientific journal, I believe that he will continue to be ignored by the scientific community, and his claims will never be soundly proved or disproved"
But what these scientists say matters not in the least . . . least of all to Emoto's fans.
Emoto has a massive following. Many have read his books, listened to his CD's, watched his DVD's and are looking at the calendars and posters they've bought, which are mysteriously missing from Dr. Emoto's web site Hado dot net.
But there is more here than meets the eye, or touch, smell, taste even. For one's belief, the wonderment received through Emoto's work, one's feelings of overpowering joy and purpose derived from his work take precedent over anything any scientist has to say. For those scientists, especially those looking for the answer to everything, work in the odd, abstract, intangible, un-provable world of theory. They work alone. We very rarely see them, never mind go to them.
But we go to Dr. Emoto. Often. For he has touched our hearts. And this is where this holistic healer, this connector, this researcher into mankind's heart makes us happy. Fills our hearts. Quantum mechanics, relativity, and string theory never filled your heart. Even though many of us have reached out in great interest to Dr. Hawking's
A Brief History of Time, it's not the same.
But we are common men and women. And we believe as the great physicist Richard Feynman, that if physics is such a great thing, then it should be accessible to all. He did not prove this to be true, as we know, so we go to Dr. Emoto. He has our hearts. And it's a rare individual who can get there through our minds. Sorry, Dr. Hawking.
But a word of caution. Buyer beware. Love Dr. Emoto for the great joy of possibility he brings. Just don't get blinded by a desperate need to know. That's all we are saying. All we are saying is give peace a chance.
