From August 8-24 th the whole world will literally be tuned in and focused on Beijing and the converging extravaganza of China flaunting its economic and athletic prowess. Not only will the Maoist Government try to clear its pollution by Draconian traffic control but also it will try to control the influx of other nations' cultural freedoms including Christianity. Certainly these measures will all be done under the guise of benevolent smiling diplomacy.
The Olympic torch even though it climbed to the top of Mount Everest, it suffered constant badgering from Tibetan and other demonstrations from persecuted people. Even Go ogle with its China's Internet restrictions will follow its contract by putting notices that it is unable to communicate many areas of information because of censor restrictions.
Behind all this is an extraordinary people who are tasting aspects of freedom which had been forbidden them for over the past fifty years. The horrendous earthquake and landslides which recently killed over 200,000 people and with mud slided mountain floods exiled almost 1,000,000, there were heroic efforts of rescuing.
What are all these convergences causing?
I ask the question. What is the Holy Spirit, which is ultimately the substratum of all history, doing to bring new life to this awesome nation of one and a half billion people?
There was a recent rumor that one of the many billionaire communist capitalists who was an outside Maoist and a covert Christian said secretly that the only ideology that will succeed to bring Democracy to the Far East(not the near East) was Christianity, not the Christianity of the past European Colonialist who suppressed the people but the Christianity of Jesus and the Beatitudes. "Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of God.... Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God." There are literally millions of these people who despite persecution are hearing the message. They are suffering because of it, but persevering like the Christians of the early Church.
Let us pray during the Olympics like Saint Paul who was also in a race for the victory.
Let us pray constantly for these dangerous and opportune times.
