Mouths can start watering as National S'Mores Day is right around the corner on Aug. 10 in the United States.
A S'More has become a camping tradition. In the past, a traditional S'More consist of a marshmallow, piece of chocolate sandwiched between two graham crackers. Campers usually roast the marshmallow over the fire before sandwiching it between the chocolate and cracker leaving a yummy, gooey, messsy treat. Yum!
Here are just a few ways to celebrate the day to the fullest with your family.
Go camping
Obviously this is the first activity. How else to celebrate the day then spending it in the woods making S'Mores. However, if you dread the messiness of the traditional S'Mores, try this recipe from the people at Family Fun Magazine. Bring aluminum foil, tortillas, chocolate chips and miniature marshmallows. For each serving, spoon chocolate chips into a tortilla along with a dozen of the mini-marshamallows. Roll up the tortilla. Wrap the tortilla up in foil. Place on the coals for four minutes or on a hot grill for eight minutes. When the foil is cool enough to hold, fold down the foil to eat.
At home
S'Mores can be made in the microwave at home just as easy as the outdoors. So if your family can make it outside, you can still have fun. Cooking S'Mores in the microwave can be tricky, though, so take your time and follow these steps for the perfect S'Mores.
It is important to assemble the ingredients in the correct order. Chocolate takes longer to melt than a marshmallow and an overcooked marshmallow is not very tasty. This is the process for using chocolate chips instead of pieces of chocolate bar: On a plate, place the chocolate chips on the graham crackers. Microwave for 1 minute on High. Add the marshallows on top. For large marshmallows, tear in half before placing on top of melted chocolate. Top with another layer of graham crackers. Microwave for 30 seconds on High. You can also get a microwave safe bowl and just melt chocolate and marshmallows, then use it as a dip for the graham crackers.
If you have a gas oven, you can get a bamboo skewer and roast marshmallows right on the stove as well.
Throw a party
S'Mores are so much a food that brings people together so why not throw a party for S'Mores Day. You needed an excuse for a party right? If you have a chocolate fountain or fondue pot, make sure you provide marshmallows to dip as well as graham crackers.
There are several other great S'Mores variations that follow.
Peanut Butter S'Mores: This can be done two ways. You can substitute peanut butter for the chocolate in the traditional recipe or just spread some on the graham cracker before adding the chocolate. Either way is super tasty!
For the adults, a S'More drink will surprise the guests. Take a glass with ice and add a ounce of Crème de Cacao and a half ounce of Drambui. Fill with milk and garnish with chocolate shavings. It will add an unusual take on the classic.
You can also make S'Mores brownies by taking a graham cracker crust, pouring brownie batter on top. Five minutes before taking it out of the oven, drop marshmallows on top of the brownies to make a melted goodness.
These are just a few variations to get you started on a fun holiday celebration. I would love to hear any other ideas you have for National S'More Day! Feel free to leave them in the comments.
