Building family memories is a vital part of having a healthy family. Several of our favorite memories revolve around quilts. Yes, quilts. We have used quilts as a way to tie our family together with lots of beautiful memories, what can you use?

We have taken our family on many picnics. These picnics are not complete without a quilt, to cuddle on after we have our meal. We have recently bought a Jeep and we always have a quilt with us in the Jeep as we go on outings. We tend to use heavier quilts for these outings because of the sturdy sewing and materials that are used, the quilt will not show the wear of outdoors as easily.

We have a wonderful family tradition of everyone making at least one homemade gift for Christmas to give another family member. My children have all made at least one blanket to give a family member. The fabrics are fun to choose and put together as we think of the personality of the family members. We have a daughter very much into music so there are always musical motif fabrics in her quilts, a son who loves insects so a quilt with ants or other insects are often made for him. There is the wonderful John Deere fabrics to make beautiful quilts. If you have a hobby or interest there is sure to be a fabric just right to personalize your blanket.

Another family memory is making quilts with Grandma. Grandma has done quilts for over 65 years and still going strong. As my daughter grew up in the summers she would do a quilt with Grandma and display it in the 4H fair. What a beautiful memory.

I love to go into the children's room and see them snuggled under a quilt made with love by Grandma or Mom or even themselves. It gives me a warm feeling. I even feel more loved as I snuggle under the quilt that is on my bed.

I have shared a few memories with you. They have helped to build a close family with ties that bind. So as we become older we can reflect on "Remember when" What are some things that your own family enjoys, do you enjoy photography? Take a few day outings and take pictures. When you are done stop and develop pictures and find the perfect picture frame to frame the photographs, and display them. I strongly believe that building strong family memories make a strong healthy family. Do you like to do woodwork? Take a step out of the ordinary and find some extraordinary wood on a day's outing and build something as a family, a mirror, a birdhouse, maybe even a bookcase. Build it as a family, every step of the way and then proudly display it. Maybe camping is where you enjoy building memories, find something to bring home to remind you of your trip. You must have an object, framed picture or something to keep your memories in your vision so that it is a constant reminder of how close your family can become as you build memories.
