Education is an essential part of life that a person cannot overlook. Sculpting and creating an educated mind at an early age promises a better future. Having an education is crucial in order, for us to progress as a nation, due to economic and social development. As in Merriam-Webster's Dictionary (2008), "Education is the field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools." To get a deeper definition of the word, we can look into the Oxford English version. Generally means that one can be educated throughout a lifetime, the learning never ends. Education is a necessity, in order to comprehend the mechanics of the world. Imagine opening a door that leads to an abundance of opportunities that create a life easier to manage.

This might bring curiosity about where the process of learning and receiving an education started. The history of how it developed is quite interesting. The Puritans in the North took teaching the bible to their young very seriously. When women would leave for the day, they would leave their children with a woman in the neighborhood. This was known as "Dame school", which is now called "Daycare". She would teach them reading by reading the bible to them. The Puritan's had stronger beliefs in education and a bigger population this made it easier, for them to form schools.

The South, on the other hand did not have the same beliefs in educating a person. The South did not begin teaching skills until after the civil war. Slavery issues kept the Southerners from schooling their people. They did not want the blacks to learn how to read and write. Many southerners believed that teaching was not their concern as a state. Because the South had such strong beliefs in the wrong direction, there were not many people who participated in receiving an education. This led to little population for schooling, and what little did attend were not considered to be schools.

Education continued to rise in the North so in 1635, the first schooling at no charge was formed. The school was called the Roxbury Latin School, the Puritans wanted to leave their next generation in charge. They believed that as long as the next generation was educated then the blacks would not be in charge. The first State Board of Education was created in Massachusetts 1837, with the first secretary being Horace Mann. Mann started a newsletter that was called "The Common School Journal"; it contained information regarding the school system. This newsletter began to interest the people and draw them in. They wanted to learn more about this education and be a part of it as well. Society not only started believing but also realized the importance of an education.

More today than in the early ages, the importance of having an education has grown stronger. Through the years many have fought for the right to be equally educated. So many people may not realize that they take it for granted. If a person has the chance to become something in life and learn as much as possible then I say "Why Not". Opportunities knocking at the door and all one has to do is open it. So many do not realize how important it is to have an education; until later in life hopefully soon enough. President Kennedy was an exceptional man who inspired so many people through his speeches. The Education portion of his State of The Union Address in 1963, found in a John F. Kennedy Quote Page, he put it so eloquently when he said:

"Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest

abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream

which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and

and greater strength for our nation."

"A child miseducated is a child lost"

This speech may have been a long time ago but it still represents the importance of education. Goel (2007) stated that, "One can safely assume that a person is not in the proper sense till he is educated" (para. 1). To my understanding this means that a person does not truly know what is going on around him or her until being educated. Not being educated could very well lead to making some bad choices in life. Soon hardship would follow, maybe even poverty which could have all been prevented. Certain situations in life that should be easy to handle such as voting may not come so easy. How would a person know who to vote for if he or she does not understand the political parties along with their beliefs.

If one is not aware of our nation's government and how it functions, then how is that person to understand the social and economical development that exists between countries? A person needs to have the knowledge of our government, why and how it operates. The government has been running the country for years and will continue to do so. Learning the history of how our nation came to be what it is today is very much needed information. Imagine what it must be like, to not be aware of how we became a free country. If a person did not know this then he or she would just walk around feeling ashamed, due to not understanding why American's are free and other countries are not. At this point the individual might have a low self-esteem and not interact as well as others.

When an individual is not educated this could hinder the chances for a higher level of self-esteem. People who have a low self-esteem are less likely to involve themselves in certain decision-making affairs. With an uneducated mind one would probably feel ashamed, or not worthy of taking a position on issues. Low self-esteem could destroy any possibilities, for a person to advance in the workplace. On the other hand an individual with a high self-esteem will want to advance and succeed in any area of life. An educated individual will be ready for almost any situation life has to offer.

An educated person will know more of how to handle complicated issues and not have so many. They will be the ones who benefit, rather than the ones who have no instruction. Life in general will run so much smoother, of course, still with issues that life has to offer, just easier to overcome. Distance Learning is now possible, for people who are not able to attend a regular class schedule due to working, or other related issues. Taking online courses has given so many people, who might have thought he or she had lost the chance, hope to gain an education. Distance Learning is truly an amazing concept, for anyone whom is interested. The uneducated mind will miss out on so much and in the end will have regrets. The future is near and with everything becoming computerized, it only makes it that much harder.

Computer technology is rising into a higher level and will continue to rise. In the near future, if a person does not carry the knowledge of computers in his or her mind then he or she will be left out. This type of education is now being taught at a lower-level to younger children. Children in primary schools are now being educated on computers. This means that they are leaving elementary with more skills then what the older generations have. I know a child in the third grade who was assigned to do a PowerPoint presentation for a grade. This was embarrassing to me because I just learned PowerPoint while in college this year through distance learning. So, I know that these babies in elementary are already more advanced than me and many adults. Being educated is extremely important to ensure that a child receives the education needed to survive. I extremely urge everyone; please do not let a child be the one lost due to miseducation.

Once everyone pulls together and instills the importance of being educated into every man, woman and child then he or she will be promised a better future. Allow the door to open and take the opportunities given, venture out what one may not be able to do without an education. Build confidence by gaining knowledge, because knowledge is power. Power, to make all the correct choices, take the appropriate direction, and lead a life without regrets. Remember that anyone can learn at any point in life, so it is never too late to receive an education.

Thank You Very Much! I was worried about it not being interseting enough. Most people do not feel as strong about education as I do. I wish there was a way to inspire young kids(pre-teens) and teenagers to love learning. Thank You!
