Svchost.exe service is required to start a lot of standard and third-party software. Svchost is an essential part of Windows. Think twice before you stop svchost.exe service - you will have to use Safe Mode to recover it. Generic host process is a part of standard Windows distribution and you can restore it there. Svchost runs as host for other services and DLLs.

If you see generic host process in your autorun list, it is probably a malware and not the legal file. Generic Host Process is a service and therefore it shouldn't appear in your startup list. Sometimes users face with svchost.exe process error. If you see any error window with Generic host process name inside, be confident to immediately stop and investigate this problem. The most common problem with Generic Host Process is "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.".

If you see error message connected with Generic.exe, scan your system with anti virus or better with two different ones. You may see malicious file known as AGOBOT-KL among other legal svchost.exe files. It's extremely difficult to determine manually whether your Generic Host Process is Generic.exe virus or not. The other possible reason of AUTOTROJ-C error is a crash of some legal DLL which uses Svchost to run itself at system bootup. You may also face svchost.exe process problem if you just installed update from Microsoft containing incorrect verison of Windows Installer.

Another known issue of svchost.exe problem is associated with double-byte character set (DBCS) characters support from Microsoft. Some old printer drivers and scanner drivers from Hewlett-Packard also proved to be incompatible with the current version of svchost.exe process. To save from svchost problem try disabling "Automatic Updates" feature or disable Windows Update service. To eliminate svchost error you may also inspect the list of all DLLs hosted by svchost.exe by running the following command: "tasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe". Be sure to use msconfig.exe utility to eliminate svchost error message by unchecking incorrect hosted services.

Uninstall old printer or scanner drivers from Hewlett-Packard to relieve generic host process if nothing else helps. Use professional services to save from Svchost if you are not sue what you are doing. Backup registry before trying to save from svchost.exe by editing the appropriate registry keys that connect svchost.exe with hosted services.

You do not need to be a PC whiz to save from svchost error with help of fix wizard. Just type something like "Svchost Fix Wizard" in your favorite search engine, follow thw instructions and forget that you ever had svchost error. The most interesting variation of svchost fix wizard I found was a complex solution for more than 20 different kinds of svchost.exe error messages.
