Are your prepared for the forces of nature and/or other emergencies that can happen to all of us at any moment? If forced to evacuate, do you have a survival kit prepared and ready to go?

We are only two months into the Hurricane Season and we already have four named hurricanes.  The latest one "Dolly" is forecast to hit the Texas and Mexico borders this week.  Also, tornado season is still very active.  We have had more tornados this year than any other.  The floods throughout the Midwest and the hundreds of fires in California before the normal fire season even starts, have made this year one we will never forget.   Are you prepared if any of these disasters happen to you or your loved ones?

Just how would you prepare for an emergency?  Authorities all agree it is best to think first about the very basics of surviving:  fresh water, food, clean air and warmth.   Following are the very basics to include in a survival kit:  (1) Water, one gallon water per person per day for at least three days; (2) Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food; (3) Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air; and (4) Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place.

Other recommended items for a survival kit include:  (1) Battery-powered or hand crank radio and extra batteries; (2) flashlight and extra batteries; (3) whistle to signal for help; (4) first aid kit; (5) moist towelettes and garbage bags for personal sanitation; (6) wrench or pliers to turn off utilities; (7) waterproof matches; (8) paper and pencil; and (9) books, games, or other activities for children.

From the basic survival kit, you can add your own personal items: (1) prescription medications and glasses; (2) infant formula and diapers; (3) pet food and extra water for your pet; (4) important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records; (5) cash; (6) complete change of clothing; and (7) feminine supplies and personal hygiene items.

No matter where you live or what you are doing, emergencies can and will happen.  Ensure you have a survival kit with enough provisions to sustain each person for a minimum of 72 hours.  It generally takes at least 72 hours until professional help arrives.  Just as you check your car and your house, you should check your emergency preparedness planning at least every six months.

If you plan ahead, you and your loves ones will remain safe and secure no matter what emergency you are facing.

Eileen Yankee, President of Yankees International, Inc, lives in Xenia, Ohio which has been hit numerous times by tornadoes.  As such, she is very interested in emergency preparation and first aid for all families.   She wants everyone to think about making plans for their own survival and is selling emergency equipment on line.  You can see her survival and first aid kits at:  http://www.yourownsecuritysite.com.

Great suggestions from one in the disaster recovery business. many people take it all too lightly until the problem is at the door. Human nature I guess? Good job.
