It is that time of the year again and as I
look at the school supply list, I feel there is a lot left off of the list.
School supply lists are great for mentioning supplies that might be needed, but
so much is left off that a kid truly needs to be successful in school.
Backpack
I started with the backpack because it is
the biggest decision for those just starting out. Here are some tips when
choosing a backpack that is left off of that list the school gives you. First
do not choose a character such as Dora, Diego, etc. backpack. Here is the
reason why. For the most part, backpacks are very sturdy and during the
elementary years will last more than one year. You want to get something that
your child will be proud of for more than one year and it still be stylish.
Functionality is also a key to choosing the
right backpack. You want it to be comfortable for your child. If you pick one
that is too big, it could endanger your child. Also, do not get one that will
be carried on the back if your child is supposed to carry a lot of books. The
weight can cause back issues. Also, check with your child’s teachers. The
kindergarten teachers at our school hate the backpacks with rollers because of
the extra noise it adds to the classroom.
Tennis shoes
It is imperative to buy a good pair of
tennis shoes for school. I know the dress shoes are cute especially for the
girls, but kids need at least a pair to carry for recess and P.E.
Lunchbox
I know you might be planning on your child
buying their lunch. You should get a lunchbox for those special occasions or
times. Again, don’t go with a character lunch box because trends change so
quickly and lunchboxes can last more than one year. I will suggest taking a
lunch because it is cheaper and you can control the healthiness of the lunches.
Another advantage is that kids who bring their lunch tend to get more time to
eat because they are not made to stand in the cafeteria lines.
Make an eye doctor appointment
Kids’ eyes change so fast and routine
checkups with pediatricians can miss a lot. Go to an opthamologist or
optometrist who specialize in eye exams. This way your child can be prepared
for ultimate success before the year starts. You would hate to think your child
was sitting in class all day unable to see.
Dentist appointment
Just as important as the eyes are the teeth.
It will give them the confidence they need to talk up when they need called
upon in class. It will also relieve any pain or eating discomfort they might
feel and catch issues early enough. It is a good time to make a yearly
appointment.
School Spirit
Check out your local parent teacher
organization. Join as a parent to support your school. Then look for the yearly
spirit shirt. You do not want your kids to be the only one without a shirt on
spirit day. I know you think it is a waste of money, but don’t punish your kid
because of school traditions.
Water bottle
Buy your child a water bottle to take in
their backpack or with their lunch. It saves on trips to the germ0infested
water fountain. Talk to your child’s teacher. My son’s teachers have always
allowed water bottles out on the desk, it cuts down on class disruptions by
trips to the water fountain.
Labels
Everything your child owns should be
labeled, so invest in a method to do this now before the school year starts. It
could be as simple as a Sharpie marker or you can design something on the
computer. There are also some great personalization companies online that you
can order from in a matter of seconds. Just be prepared and remember to label.
These are just a few items left off the
school supply lists every year. I am sure you might have some others as well.
Feel free to leave them in the comment section.
