I was riding past a car dealership and there was this pretty lady holding a sign that said "free gas".  At once I knew that "free" really did not mean I would get the gas for free.  Not even for one moment did I think that I could pull my car in and say "fill er' up" and I would get a tank of gas for free, no questions asked.  I knew that I had no chance of actually beating this energy crisis by just tapping into this new and wonderful source of free gas.

This made me think back to all of the things I have seen that were "free" but always would end up costing me money.  I still see that nice college professor type guy talking about all those great DVD's he had and wanted to mail to me for "free".  As long as I were to pay for the shipping and handling, they were "free".  I just checked his website and I can even get a "free" bonus gift, as long as I paid the shipping and handling.  I may have been born at night, but not last night.  It does not cost more than a buck for that disk to arrive at more door so he must spend a lot to handle the shipping.

I just typed the word "free" on a popular search engine and was balsted with results.  I went from site to site and clicked on link after link and was not able to find anything for "free".  I could not find one thing, at all that was "free".  This then started me to wonder if I had learned some incorrect fact in my life as to what the definition of "free" really meant.  I then turned to the dictionary and was shocked to read that to mean "without cost" was actually number 17 on the list of definitions.

I guess I was wrong all these years.  "Free" does not really mean you will get something for nothing, it really means you have to buy something to get something else for"free".  I sure feel foolish for being so ignorant for so long to think that "free" meant I was going to get something for nothing.  Am I the only one left in the world who thought "free" meant something for nothing?

Keith has been frustrated with all the hype concerning weight loss. Visit www.IChooseThin.com.  He has attempted to create a place where you can obtain healthy weight loss knowledge without the pressure of someone attempting to sell you a specific product or weight loss pill. The information gathered has been arranged in an easy to use format. www.IChooseThin is the result of a two year quest for information without the hype normally associated with weight loss.

Hi, You have hit on a prevalent product marketing tool. Some things are free; others are not. Perhaps most are not. When my husband and I hear of something free, especially a product (free information seems more likely to be truly free), our first questions are similar to your reaction: what's the price? what's the catch?
