The average shopper looking for an oriental rug tends to look at the beauty and the quality of the rug.  Although oriental rugs are extremely beautiful and a great addition to anyone's household décor, there is also meaning behind each design that is woven into the rugs.

Each rug is designed with a little bit of the weavers personality and beliefs woven in. Designs and symbols that have no meaning to the average person hold deep meaning for the creator of the rugs. Below is an example of some of the different designs and their traditional associations.

1. Camel-Wealth
2. Carnation-Happiness
3. Dove-Peace
4. Parrot-Love
5. Pomegranate-Abundance
6. Tree of Life-Eternity

While looking at oriental rugs to purchase, you may not even notice that there are indeed recognizable symbols and images woven directly into the rug.  To the untrained eye, some designs may be difficult to see because the weavers tend to weave in a more stylized design or geometrical representation.  A professional oriental rug dealer can be of great assistance in pointing out the different designs that are woven into each one.

When selecting that perfect oriental rug to enjoy in your home, you may not wish to choose a design solely by the meaning, but understanding some of the symbolic representations in the design can bring you richer appreciation of the beauty of the work.

If you are overwhelmed with the complex symbolism of a design, a professional oriental rug dealer may be able to explain some of the lore surrounding the design of the art in oriental carpets, allowing you to obtain a rich combination of visual beauty and symbolism to create the living environment that you desire.
