Acne, that dreaded disease of the skin, affects almost 85 % of the population in the United States alone. This, most common of skin disorders, knows no boundaries, and pick it's victims over the whole age spectrum. Teenagers and adults alike, may be inflicted at random, although heredity, may seem to also play a role. There are numerous explanations, as to the causes of acne. Many case studies may be found in numerous, respectable medical publications. There are also a host of myths and accompanying misconceptions doing the rounds. However, one thing all these publications, have in common, is the general type of treatment.

These include topical creams, such as Benzaclin, Klaron and Azelex, as well Tretinoin and Adapalene, to name but a few. These creams are helpful for clearing blocked pores. Some of these substances may have unfavorable side effects and should therefore, only be used on the recommendation and guidance of a qualified dermatologist. Topical creams may be effective for less serious to mild cases of acne.

For more serious cases, treatment may include the use of oral antibiotics, such as tetracycline, doxycycline or even amoxicillin. As with the previous treatment, be aware of each of these medications' side effects. Some have very unpleasant side effects.
Isotretinoin is another acne drug, that is often prescribed in severe acne cases. However, effective as this drug may be, it can lead to serious birth defects in pregnant women. Please do extensive research on the side effects, the use of this drug may cause.

Laser therapy, both for treating the disease, and improving the appearance of acne scarred skin, as well as the use of photodynamic therapy, are some of the weapons modern medicine are using in the fight against acne. Unfortunately, no conclusive data exists, yet, on the long term, effectiveness of these therapies. Well have to wait and see.

All of these treatments, have one other thing in common. Apparently, to have maximum effect, it is recommended that it be used, in conjunction with some of the other, forms of treatment. Also, it will not cure your acne, merely control it. So you'll have to stay on the program, indefinitely, it seems. Well, we've heard and read it over and over again, there's no cure for Acne, merely treatments. But are these statements true?
