Open mail over the recycling bin. Don't carry your mail over to your desk or table where it's bound to pile up and take hours to go through later. Open it right over the recycling bin and get rid of all unnecessary mail and inserts immediately. Lay aside any documents that need to be shredded and shred them ASAP. This includes those pesky credit card applications!
Keep a memorabilia box where you put those things that are memorable. Limit yourself to one or two plastic containers (you decide on the size). When the containers are full, you must take out something before putting something new in. This will result in only very precious memories being stored in the containers.
