I started in on the series ' Prison Break' quite by accident. I never watch T.V., but I've probably seen more films than Siskel and Ebert. Thanks to the unlimited rental deals provided by Netflix and Blockbuster, you can very literally never be without a film or documentary to watch at your discretion. However, you can also run out of worth while new releases to view via the 'in store exchanges' that you haven't already seen; and it is because of this that I had to resort to picking from the ailes of television series. From the first disc of season one of Prison Break, I was hooked. It didn't take me very long to catch up to season three, and not one episode has been a waste of time. In fact, unlike many television series, succeeding episodes never get lost and desperate by going overboard; but instead, manage to hold on to your suspension of disbelief, and become more intriguing, the plot increasingly creative, and the characters evolve rather than become stagnate and tiresome. This is the kind of epic where even the good guys have flaws, and the bad guys are unpredictable, smart, and somehow manage to gain your sympathy. Needless to say, that the acting is superb, and the directing and cinematography is almost too cutting edge for a regular cable network channel. Fox must be amidst its glory days with this one: holding them up right along side HBO and Showtime. All the better for us who don't waste our money on repetitive premiere channels.
I don't want to give away any of the plot details because it would ruin the thrill of it for you - but think 'Shawshank Redemption' on speed meets ' 24', and you might get an idea of what to expect. It's sharply written, sexy, and incredibly addictive. If you like the first season, I can guarantee you that you'll like the third season even better. There's something very crafty about having sympathy for the devil, but Prison Break pulls it off with a shrug; almost as if you should have expected it, but didn't.
So, go out and rent it if you can, or if you hadn't already seen it on Fox. If you're an adrenaline junky: this show's for you. It's almost stressful to watch this cliffhanger! I have to wonder how long they can keep it up. I mean, how long can you hold your breath underwater?
