I'm voting for Barack Obama this November 4th for President of the United States. What follows in this article are 7 of the many reasons I am voting for Obama and not John McCain.
1. Obama was against the Iraq war from the start. Very few politicians had the integrity and the judgment to know that the Iraq war was a mistake before it began. John McCain certainly did not. McCain was one of the many politicians who thought Iraq would be a short easy war and that American soldiers would be "greeted like liberators" in Iraq.
2. Obama will lower taxes for people making less than $111,645 per year (that includes me, unfortunately!) more than John McCain will. McCain has been running many misleading advertisements which make the claim that Obama is raising taxes across the board. That is not true. Obama is only raising taxes for the very rich and for corporations (who have not paid their fair share of taxes.)
For 90% of Americans, Obama's plan will bring lower taxes than McCain's will. This is an important fact not only because of the lower taxes that most Americans will pay but also because it speaks to McCain's lack of integrity. McCain continues to run ads which disingenuously claim a vote for Obama is a vote for higher taxes.
3. Obama is pro choice and will nominate pro choice judges for the Supreme Court. McCain has said he will be a "pro life President." Nobody is pro-abortion. It's not the role of the government to tell a woman what she can do with her own body.
If you believe in a woman's right to choose it is essential that you support Barack Obama as it's very likely the next President will be nominating 2 to 3 Supreme Court Justices. If McCain is the one nominating those judges, it's very possible that Roe V. Wade could be reversed.
4. Foreign policy. Obama showed he had superior judgment with his stance on Iraq. The things he said about the Iraq war in 2002 before it had even begun all turned out to be the truth. We need a President who has judgment and the ability to know when and where to strike. The shoot first ask questions later cowboy mentality of the Bush/Cheney administration would be made even worse by McCain who, as Pat Buchanan put it, would make "Cheney look like Gandhi."
5. International respect. George W. Bush has been a huge embarrassment for Americans. People all over the world now think of Americans as morons. Barack Obama is already loved all over the world. He is a brilliant speaker who understands the nuance of how to converse with people from different cultures. He's preferred in Europe over McCain by enormous margins. Obama as President would instantly make America popular again.
6. Health care. While I do not believe that Barack Obama's health care plan is the universal plan that our country really needs, it is a good step towards a better plan and it will help to lower health care costs. McCain's approach would hurt more than help. There would be even more people without health care with McCain as President.
7. Energy. While McCain is harping on the ridiculous non-issue of off shore drilling because he knows it plays well to the many uneducated voters in this country, it is Obama who has a real plan for energy independence. McCain's off shore drilling plan would only help to make extremely rich oil companies even more rich. It would not lower gas prices.
I'm sorry but I believe Obama is just the other side of the same coin. So long as they both are part of the two party system we'll end up with nothing but the same. First of all, Obama and McCain can make promises all they wish. Truth be told? They won't be able to keep them due to the Congress, Senate and Supreme Court. The court appointees, once confirmed, on more than one occasion did not vote the way the Presidents who nominated them would like. The promises made by the presidents, when put to the test, have been forced to capitulate to Congressional and Senatorial pressure. Obama has made many promises that I am sure he knows he won't be able to keep. McCain has made many promises that he, too, knows he won't be able to keep. Obama? McCain? I don't trust either of them and would rather vote for Ron Paul. His track record has been consistent across the board. He has steadfastly refused to act contrary to the Constitution which is supposed to be the final law of the land. Neither Obama or McCain can make that claim. I truly think this election will bring us a president that won't deliver. Just my own humble opinion which I'm sure will result in flaming from others. Such is life. I'll deal with it and move on. Hopefully both candidates will be voted out by "none of the above." That would be the prime outcome.

i'm afraid that i think you are absolutely correct. i want to vote "no confidence" but where does that get us? i will most likely vote for Ron Paul, for the reasons you've mentioned and more (see him in America: Freedom to Facism... he says great things about the IRS mafia). we should all vote for "Kurt Vonnegut" elect dead man because apparently dead men voted for Bush 2x.

needs back up. what are your resources? any links to prove this?
i'll only comment on the healthcare issue, McCains plan is to make you pay taxes on the money your employer puts into your health care and give a $2500 tax credit, to offset the taxes paid or to find private health care. Most companies pay $5000+ to health care, that means you will have to pay taxes on $5000+ dollars but you get $2500 to (hardly) make up for that. plus where can you find coverage for $2500 if employers with big spending power and high-volume discounts still pay $5000+ ?
Obama's plan is to make companies (not small ones, but 'small' is not defiined yet) pay for all employees' health care and if the employee chooses to use a private insurer the company still pays a portion in taxes to be used in a National Health Care Program for those that can't afford or are denied coverage (which happens all the time, even if you've been paying into it for a long time). the National HC Program would not be allowed to turn away people with pre-existing conditions (asthma, old age, mental problems) and couldn't drop you for no reason, in the middle of ER surgery (current insurers can do that).
so basically McCain want YOU to pay more for insurance coverage that doesn't change, can still drop you anytime and refuse to insure someone. Obama wants Employers to insure all emploayees, whether the employee uses it or not is up to them, but the unused money will be put into the National Health Care Program.
i got my info from National Public Radio, here is a link to what i think is the story i heard . . .
no links allowed ?!!??!? go to NPR and search for an article titled " Candidates' Health Care Plans: Private Vs. Public" Respond to this comment
The democrats in my family will NOT be voting for Barach Obama. Rezko got $14 MILLION dollars due to his association with Obama in ILL Senate; and all of the low income housing is bust and the money squandered. Rezko is a Syrian, with connections to the Oil for Food Scandal that was tied to Sadaam Hussein. Many meetings and friendship associations of Rezko's have been tied to Obama, but he denies it. Ayers is a terrorist, from whose home Obama launched his ILL Senate campaign, and 20 yrs under Wright's preaching of Black Liberation Theology (reverse racism toward white's) will disqualify him from our families support. There is way too many corrupt associations to believe he is who he says he is. If his judgment is that bad for personal and political associations as a Senator, then he has no business in Washington, DC as President. Politics can be a blind walk, when we aren't independent enough to investigate claims that are documented. What is the CHANGE, being taunted??? His past Senate votes, and ILL Senate actions show no change from corrupt politics, and intenational associations that are questionable.
- The scandal is that instead of nationalizing Iraqi oil production, to get them on their feet again, their oil has been privatized with no-bid contracts to American and British oil conglomerates, who now control Iraq's oil wealth. That was decided in th White House, by the way, before the actual invasion took place.
- Obama was eight years old when Ayers was a Weatherman.
"Obama who has a real plan for energy independence..."
Oh really? What is it? I haven't heard him put forth a plan for anything.
We basically picked a guy off the streets and now he's running for
President. How gullible can Americans get? Obama is the biggest con job
to ever hit the American scene. He's a song-and-dance man. If you met
him on a street corner you'd probably buy a few watches off him.
Did you hear his speech? He's going to solve all our problems. No
experience in anything. No logical sounding plan that's based on
anything real as to how he's going to solve all this. He just says he's
going to fix everything. How stupid can people get?
If your kid came home from college and told you we have 57 states,
wouldn't that concern you? We have a guy running for president who at
one point said we have 57 states, why doesn't this raise a red flag
with people. The man is ignorant. He's going to run this country?
What's wrong with you?
hmmmmm....ok...he messed up with the "57 states" response...BADDDD Obama. Hasn't it concerned you that during the past 8 years we've been dealing with the village idiot? A President that can't seem to speak in clear, consise sentences? They've labled a language after him? Ever heard of "Bushisms" LOL LOL Come on get with the program. We've had an ignoramus in the White House for 8 years...your're funny.

Actually, Obama is a U.S. Senator. Hardly what you would call "picked off the street."
Who among us can identify with McCain's plan to increase the wealth of the wealthiest corporations, and yet give short shrift to the middle (and he's never said anything about the lower) class American? I am not so gullible as to buy into McCain's song and dance rhetoric, which simply do not speak to the modal American. His clownish choice for a running mate merely cinched the deal.
Why is off shore drilling ridiculous? You are ok with killing babies? Please demonstrate the math and all relevant sections of the tax code on your claim that Obama will reduce taxes for all people making less than $111,645. Unless you can demonstrate the math, your claim is fiction.
Off Shore drilling is bad? Do you understand the law of supply and demand? The real estate market is clearly showing us what an oversupply of anything does. It lowers prices. Not having enough does just the opposite. It raises prices. I have no idea where you get your information about oil companies. Are you just someone who hates capitalism and any story that says nasty things about oil companies, whether or not it is true, is good enough for you?

"Why is off shore drilling ridiculous? You are ok with killing babies?"
And there you have it. Someone else who has bought the line from the Republicans to dupe the christians into voting for them while ignoring the fact that the Republicans are killing the social programs that help the sick and the poor while lining the pockets of their big-business cronies.
And by the way, there are more people in America who need a house than there are houses, so in that sense there's not an over supply. These Americans just can't afford to live in these houses.
Thanks, Marvin, for your clearly written article. I agree with much of it, except that it is not the role of politicians to be deciding the abortion issue, though the Supreme Court has made it their business. Politicians should not be in charge of personal moral choices. We should vote for candidates based on their qualification for office, not whether or not they will appoint a particular mindset of judges.
"...it is not the role of politicians to be deciding the abortion issue,
though the Supreme Court has made it their business. Politicians should
not be in charge of personal moral choices."
Good article. I'm often fascinated as to why people that don't agree with what's written or have something rude or insensitive to say (which I'm not claiming is the case with any of these comments) feel the need to remain anonymous....weird
if you raise the taxes on the corporations they will leave the united states for a country with a lower tax bracket. do you know why all the jobs are going overseas is because we have the second highest tax bracket for corporations. businesses are there to make money there not here to make jobs. if you raise the taxes on the corporations again even more will leave. think about it if every dollar they made 50 cents was taken out how long would you stick around. barack obama is doing a classic liberal move pitting the poor against the rich. only problem the rich usually create the jobs for the poor.
To the person that said that Obama said we have 57 states in our country, HE WAS MAKING A JOKE. Also, the comment you left was clearly full of content that is based off of ignorant statements. The man went to Columbia University, and then on to Harvard Law where he became the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review. For any ignorant people out there, those are both very prestigious schools, and a person must be very intelligent to go there. He's a "song and dance man" and you can "buy watches off the street from him?" I'm sorry but that is the most idiotic thing I've ever heard. He did not come off of the streets and into the candidacy; I remember reading articles about him (positive ones) about the changes he was making in the senate over four years ago. It is absurd to think that a person is incapable of running a country because you heard some negative stereotypes about the man that are based off of pure (let's just say it) racism and ignorance.
I think people need to vote with their heads and not heart. I disagree about the abortion issue, but I have found that I would rather have more positives then negatives. I also think that whoever is writing maliciously and anonymous should check wikipedia and other resources. Bottom line, the Bush administration has been awful.
Enough cannot be said on your point numbers 1 and 4, the prescient clearheadedness of how morally reprehensible an Iraq Invasion was, even from its very conception, and the extremely urgent need to restore foreign diplomacy as the primary solution over a military solution.
I've heard quite enough from McCain and the clueless Palin about the "insurgency worked...insurgency worked" quasi-religious mantra to know my little #2 "X" must not inadvertently decorate their selection box on the November ballot.
Indeed, a year ago Obama was a relative nobody on my horizon. Then I read his dissent on the Iraq Invasion. Then later, I heard him speak on the wisdom of engaging diplomatically, as opposed to aggressive posturing with Iran. He made abundant sense!
Economies come and go, but look at what this damned (yes, it is damned) "war" has cost America in every way conceivable, blood, moral standing, the systematic deconstruction of the U.S. Constitution, hundreds of billions of dollars to a few private no-bid contractors, and I cannot even begin to express my regret that the Iraqi citizenry has suffered the most.
Recognition of Bush's profit motivated war must not be lost in the October financial madness.
gregory, What America has lost in the last few years is cannot be counted in dollars, Barack Obama represents only more loss of the same. If you don't know what that is then its not likely anyone could tell you or skirt your argument long enough to actually get your attention.
