I really adore my dog but often wonder just how unhygenic it is to let her sleep on my bed?

A Mistake or Not?
I made the silly mistake (in my eyes) of enabling her to sleep there every night when she was a puppy.  There was no mistaking the delight on her face when she realised that it was time for bed. She would settle herself diagonally across the bottom of the bed, directly where my feet wanted to be. Constantly throughout the night she would alter her position, making herself comfortable, totally unconcerned that every move she made woke me up. But as uncomfortable as it was, I really didn't mind her being there.

Oh Dear!
The situation changed one night when I became aware of a really warm feeling on my feet. She had wet my bed! Not just the duvet, but all the way through to the mattress too.

It was bad enough when my children had accidents in the bed, but dog's urine was something else!

This prompted me to think very carefully that this wasn't very hygienic. Her coat obviously isn't totally spotless, (she is a dog after all) and those paws and that rear end have been God knows where.

No this was no longer for me.

I bought a new bed and mattress, making sure that because of it's height, she couldn't leap onto it. She now sleeps in her bed, on the floor next to mine and she is still very happy.

The Guilt
Admittedly I did for a while feel guilty when I looked up at her little face as she looked pleadingly at me at bedtime, but she soon accepted the new sleeping arrangements. I am happier knowing I am going to bed in a non-dog smelling bed. She gets the same amount of love and affection as she ever did - but the bed is now mine alone.
