Officially, Labor Day is a national holiday for Americans. I could not tell you when or who actually started it, other than that it has been around for over a century and some decades. What I can tell you about it is that it is not only for the work force in America, but for the kids whom experience all the excitement and wonders of family gatherings, or possibly just even one less day of school. Could Labor Day be for the teacher to have one last holiday before returning to all those intricate things necessary to the educational growth of the American student? How about for all the fathers who just want any excuse to fire up the old pit and show off his grilling skills and wash it down with a cold one? Mothers need a break too and perhaps they will go along with anything but it is a break for them none the less.
Everyone has their own version of Labor Day. For me, it isn't my favorite holiday, nor can I remember what I did for last Labor Day except for one thing. Except for one thing every year since I was in the third grade.
In the third grade, two friends and I would go around town and collect money for Jerry's Kids with these little milk cartons. The reward was a free slurpee and a hot dog when we turned in the money to a Seven Eleven cashier. And it sure hit the spot too. This went on for three years, after that I would just donate to the telethon. Till this day I still do it, every single time.
I love to barbecue, have family and friend gatherings, cook, relax, and just get into the Labor Day spirit and it may be in vein. But my traditional donation never is and if it were up to me it would be called "Labor Day/MDA Day" because that is what "un Labor Day" has always meant to me. Can you remember your Labor Days? No need to, just be thankful for one more day in this great nation of ours where we are free to celebrate our national holidays any way we want. God Bless America!

Great article, Michael. Labor Day means different things to different people and I'm like you; it isn't my favorite holiday, I was just glad to get another day off work and gather with family and friends for a big cookout. I do love the cookouts.
Thanks for sharing and have a nice holiday this year.
