As I click my remote control, looking for something decent to watch on television, I sometimes wonder about the mental health of those poor souls who write the scripts for contemporary television and movies.
Most of them must live in an sordid intellectual world that is filled either with crime, violence, sexual indulgence or crass, stupid comedy. Virtually every story, no matter the title or theme, is laced with foul speech and steamy sexual scenes. Most of them seem to know nothing of normal people who earn their living in honest employment, of loving, normal families. Christianity must be unknown to them. The few references to it are mere props, a wedding or a funeral. More often the Christian is ridiculed or depicted as someone, stupid, corrupt or evil. The Mafia gets a better shake in these media than do Christians. Things that are wholesome, good and beneficial for society are either ignored or distorted into something evil. Things that are sordid, corrupt and evil are presented as having some value. Sizeable numbers of them must surely hate America and despise our law enforcement officers and our military.
I wonder, what kind of home did these people grow up in? Had they any religious training at all? In what kind of schools were they educated to have such a twisted, perverted view of life? Did they never know the joy of a happy home with a father, mother and children. Did they never associate with normal people? Can they not discern the difference between good and evil? Do they have no love for this nation that provides them the freedom to live their lives and pursue their careers. Have they not considered what our society would be like if all those who volunteer to protect us from the evil people should one day walk off the job?
I refuse to spend my leisure hours in such a dark and decadent world as these writers depict. I am grateful for stations that run the older movies where good and evil are set in contrast and the good is promoted. I I appreciate stories where decent people are given respect and the bad folks are not glorified. When nothing worthwhile can be found on the stations, I can pop a video in my VCR and watch something that I would be glad to share with my grandchildren.

John, I've wondered about the mental health of all of Hollywood for a long time now. I just don't get the stuff they put out these days. Perhaps I'm not sophisticated or secular enough to understand it. Great article!
