Why have I got a vaginal rash is a common query. A vaginal rash is an ailment that women (men) at some time may have had, or will experience. Women tend to treat a rash regardless of not knowing the cause. This is not healthy and can be damaging. A rash forming in and around the vagina is not normally seen as a problem that requires medical attention. Nonetheless the discomfort from the condition allows it to worsen if the patient scratches the infected area, or heaven forbid use the wrong treatment. More women are coming out of their shell unafraid to visit their GP with their vaginal concerns. This is good news because doctors can detect vaginal diseases in time to save lives.

Untreated infections can turn nasty, so like a venereal disease too. Particular VDs left untreated can lead to serious health complications or result in death. If a vaginal rash is not duly caused by an allergic reaction to a specific material touching the skin, or spurred on by substances contained in bathroom smellies then it may be related to an infection. Various infections known to cause vaginal rash:

  • Yeast infections
  • Herpes
  • Genital warts
  • Trichomoniasis

The vaginal rash is more connected to yeast infections when fungus Candida is allowed to reproduce around the vagina. Tight clothing cannot be ruled out as a cause. Taut garmenting smothers the vagina therefore causing unhealthy damage. When you sweat, instead of the sweat being absorbed leaving the genital area cool and dry, it creates a moist environment for yeast fungi to grow.

Vaginal rash can occur round the time of menstruation if tampons or sanitary pads are not removed in the safe hygienic period. Cleaning done the wrong way after bowel movement - can cause vaginal issues. The acidic effect of urine can give reason for irritation. Think about it, why babies get nappy rash. An over wet nappy is usually the reason. Thoroughly dry the vagina and pubic hair after using the loo. Vaginal rash is also believed to derive from sexually transmitted diseases i.e. genital warts or herpes. Some women swear by soaking in a warm bath laced with salt and vinegar for soothing.

Under the arms and in between the toes are other body parts where yeast infection locates. Yeast fungus namely Candida is not rare and found on the mouth, fingers, skin and throat.

Candida albicans has been implicated in causing vaginitis.

Signs which show the yeast infection

  •  vaginal burning
  •  burning feel when peeing
  •  discomfort during or after sexual intercourse
  •  vaginal odor (not nasty)
  •  irritation
  •  vulva burning and itchiness
  •  itchy vagina
  •  weeing pain
  •  red rawness and swelling

Medication bought from the chemist should be used with caution. The genital area is tender and the skin sensitive, so un-agreeable treatments can cause serious health issues. Home treatments include nonprescription vaginal creams or suppositories. A single dose of fluconazole (Diflucan) tablet is effective for vaginal yeast infections. Fluconazole requires a prescription.

Genital herpes is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It is sexually transmitted showing symptoms of skin blisters and sores, sometimes no visible symptoms. Unfortunately conditions with no show of symptoms cause serious setbacks for the patient UN-be known to them there is a disease progressing. HSV remains in the body for life even after only first time infection. Specific treatments reduce the number and severity of herpes outbreaks, but scarily cannot cure it completely.

Genital warts are an STD which affects male and females. They are caused by various types of human papillomavirus. HPV can affect the cervix, vagina, vulva, and anus. They can distort abnormal Pap test results. In contrast the male penis is affected, the scrotum and anus. Genital warts can disappear without the need of treatment but it can also grow and further spread.

To prevent vaginal nasties is to maintain a heath pact with the vagina. The vagina requires as much attention to hygiene as do other parts of the body.

1 Cut down sugar consumption and replace with yogurt. Vaginal bacteria are a particular type that is only contained in a couple of foods. Yogurt contains good bacteria called acidophilus. Sugar promotes the type of bacteria that the yogurt bacteria attempt to kill.

2 Infections mainly rise from sweat or oils build up. Wash regularly. Do not douche unless under doctors orders. Douching is too severe, although taking bad bacteria it also takes serious amounts of good bacteria. Douching can cause inflammation (vaginitis). Use a flannel with a mild unscented soap to wash inside.

3 Condoms help keep the vagina clean.

4 Wearing cotton underwear permits breathing space allowing the skin around the vagina to stay fresh.

5 Leaving tampons for longer than six hours is not only unhealthy and smelly, it is very dangerous. It can cause toxic shock syndrome which is a serious but uncommon bacterial infection. Although it was directed towards the use of tampons it is supposedly associated with the contraceptive sponge and diaphragm birth control method. Toxic shock syndrome symptoms include rapid high fever, faintness, and loose diarrhea, headache, and muscle pain.

6 Soap is not necessary it can encourage vaginal dryness. Warm water is ideal.

Aside from vaginal issues the whole personal hygiene entity is a beneficial aspect you should endorse on the body to keep killer infections away.

Hi you mention trying a hot bath. I shouldn`t think that this would harm, however it is best to know what you are trying to soothe. Your symptoms can be the result of many things - tight clothes - infection or other. I know you don't like the thought of seeing your GP - but it really is the best thing to do. You could try going online where you can actually put your problem across to a doctor and in return get an answer from a proffessional. I am sorry I can not be of more help but if you have a vaginal rash - try a "warm" bath and loosen clothes around the crotch, or leave underwear off if possible.

Stay well

Hey again. I went on different websites, searching for different things to try at home. i saw one thing- drink more water than usual (so i carried a water bottle about and refilled it often) and drink pure fruit juices. i also used your idea- not to wear tight clothing, which i do a lot lol. and it's helping! i don't think it was as bad as i thought. maybe i just need more water so it can pass easier. (: thanks for the help

Hi Kacy here - It's not for me to say what I "think" it is. However you shouldn't be stressing you're self out over this as it does sound like a vaginal rash but it is best for you to get it checked out. You say your doctor is a grown man - this is good news because he will be more clued up so as to speak on problems as such. The longer he has been in the prefession the more he will have seen problems like this. You say he is grown up and you are young - I think you are very grown up to address the issue.

Now pop along and ask to see a woman doctor if your still troubled over having a male doctor treat you. I am sure there is nothing to worry about - so put your mind and rest and be grown up about this and go and find out for sure. Let me know how you got on so I know you are not worrying anymore.
Keep safe

Hi. I currently went to the doctor because I was in pain when peeing (it was burning!) and he told me it was a uti but before this I had a little rash on my vagina, it was like small red bumps, it almost looked like little zits, and I figured that they would just go away but they spread and I am freaking out because I do not know what it is, I thought it was just a vaginal rash but ahhh what if its something else??

Hi. yes what if it is something else - so more the reason to have these lookalike zits checked out - not because they maybe serious but more to put your mind at rest. What you describe does sound like vaginal pimples and if your stressed this can cause a delay in treatments. This could also be the reason why they are spreading or maybe the result of how you are treating them. You have to be sure of what the problem is so you don't make matters worse.

Just nip along to your doctor so he/she can give you something for your problem, and then you can stop worrying.
Come back and let us lnow how you get on
Keep well

hi I'm 15 and I have really bad dry, flakey skin behind my ears and alittle on my fingers, and on my elbows. Behind my ears and on my elbows it is very dry, itchy and red. I told my dad about this and went to the doctor and got some cream called triamcinolone. It worked for a couple weeks and after 2 weeks you should stop using it for a while. I been using it for a couple months and it just always comes back and never clears up. But recently I have been starting to get really dry, red, itchy skin around my vagina. It burns sometimes, but I believe it's just from me itching. And I always am slighty wet down there, like have some discharge. I'm a pretty open person but I live with my dad, I'm just nervous about telling him without it being awkward and embarrissing myself. I'm not sexually active. Haha I want to have sex after marriage to be honest. And I really never wear tight pants. Could it be the material of my underwear? Or is there any chance I could have some sort of skin condition that could be treated since I first started getting dry skin in other places? Or is this different from my dry skin and possibly a yeast infection? Lotion doesn't work good, so have any advice I could use to try to avoid seeing a doctor? If so, please help. I'm not real concerned because my brother also gets dry skin on his elbows. But his has been cleared up for a long time now. And mine just seems to be getting worse!

Hi Tiff you do seem to be going through the mill with your problem. You say it has come back. When something is not clearing up you should return to your doctor and tell him. I know you don't want to go to the doctor with the vaginal problem you have - but Tiff its best if you do - and anyhow most people like you will do their best to avoid visiting their doctor and nearly always end up having to go when their problems get worse.

It's better to treat early when a condition is mild instead of severe. Your worrying can be ended if you get yourself checked out. Because you did mention you want to get married and do the things married people do. Depending on the vaginal condition - if left without treatments may prevent you from doing this.

Come back Tiff and let us know how you got on

Keep safe

Hi... umm... my name is Janelle, I'm 18 and kind of scared to go to the doctor because I've always been afraid to see them for issues like this. But, earlier in a previous comment, you mentioned "Vaginal pimples", is this something that can happen normally to a woman? Or is it something serious like a persisting problem? See, I think I've got them too because they're kind of yellowish and the skin is real red around the vulva. They're not always real defined, and they don't always bother me, but they never really go away. Do you think this might be a yeast infection? Because I have tried Vagisil and over the counter stuff like that and it still bothers me! Worse than that, I can't get them to go away. I've tried everything, do you think I should go in to the doctor to at least get an antibiotic just in case??

Thanks.

Hi Janelle - I dont think your as much afraid of going to the doctor - but more embarrassed, and let me tell you that you are not on your own "even me." Yes vaginal pimples can happen to all women. It is always best to visit your GP, however there is a link at the bottom of this article "vaginal infections" where you may find more information on your problem and how to treat it at home. I haven't had reason to use this, but I suppose it ca'nt help to check it out. You know what they say Janelle "feel the fear and do it anyway" now pop along to your doctor. Ask to see a nurse if it will make you feel better.

Now go and clear the infection up, if it is an infection, so you can stop worrying. Come back and let me know how you got on

Keep well

Hey, Kacy & i think i have a problem. My vagina tends to itch from time to time & i think i have a rash . i'm not very sure because its really low like on the bottom. If your discharge doesn't have a color does that still mean i could have a problem because it smells different from usual. I am 15 & i'm sexually active but i dont want to tell my parents and get them all worried if im just overreacting.

Can you help me please?

Much Love ,

Denise.

Hey Kacy you say - and I say Hey you because I don't have your name. I understand you don't want tell your parents but if you did they wouldn't think this as you over re-acting, more like being sensible. Why not confide in mom as you never know has she herself ever had a problem like this. Its perfectly normal to have an itch in this spot. You say you think theres a rash lower towards the bottom, this maybe nothing to worry about, however still get it checked out to clear it up.

If your discharge is smelly this could be a sign of infection, once again not really something to worry about because vaginal infections are treatable and curable, however they can worsen if they are not treated. Go and get the problem seen too. You say your sexually active then you need to use protection because your problem may have stemmed from unprotected sex. Also if you have an infection it is not good to be having sex.

Now hey you go and get treated and come back and let me know how you get on
Keep well

Hey Kacy, I was diagnosed 2 days ago with a Urinary tract Infection and the pain became worse and worse so I went back to the hospital today and a different doctor is now telling me I have genital herpes!!!! I never thought I'd ever hear that!!! I have little sores yes on my vagina, the labia and whatnot, not many but I think they are more like friction burns maybe from having sex, and they seem to be getting more painful when I pee, the pee touches them and its unbarable, Im thinking because of the UTI I was "diagnosed" with 2 days ago....I am soo confused as to what I actually have, I also have pain in my lower stomach say "ovaries area" and I did tell the doctor that but it seemed as soon as he looked at my vagina he was set on me having genital herpes, and forgot about all the other things I had told him that were bothering me. All of my symptoms that I have had the last few days include these: fever, nausea, chills, burns when I pee in and around my whole vagina, lower stomach pain, bladder region/ovaries.....does this sound like Genital herpes to you??? My mother thinks its not right at all because she gets the exact same thing when her blood sugar is too high, she's diabetic. We even told the doctor that but its like he didnt hear it...what do I think or do Im soo depressed and confused i really hope its not an STD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HI Bogey first let us not fret more than neccesary as I can see you are serioulsy worried. And hey what if you do have an STD, if its happened then it has to be dealt with - if this is the problem. Bogey I can see your dilemma, what with one doctor diagnosing a UTI as the problem, and another doctor saying Genital Heprpes. I suggest you go back and voice your concerns about which doctors prognosis is right.

Although genital herpes infections generally are not emergencies, treatment is more effective if started within the first few days of the outbreak. So it's important
you know which GP is right in their prediction.

Symptoms of herpes tend to develop within 3-7 days of skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. Herpes infections look like little blisters or ulcers (round areas of
broken skin) on the genitals. Each blister or ulcer is normally only 1-3 millimeters in size, and the blisters or ulcers tend to be grouped. Usually the blisters form first, they soon open to form ulcers. Blisters or ulcers can cause mild and severe discomfort  (slightly tender or tender and painful.

The first herpes outbreak is usually the most painful and this maybe why you have such discomfort, that is if Genital Herpes is the issue - but of course you don't know that for sure so make that appointment to see you doctor again. People differ and may develop other signs of herpes infection, particularly with the first episode such as - Fever - Muscle aches - Headaches (may be severe) - Vaginal discharge or painful urination - Swollen and tender lymph glands in the groin

Symptoms of UtI

Lower urinary tract infection (cystitis): The lining of the urethra and bladder becomes inflamed and irritated.

Pain or burning during urination

Frequent need for urination often with only a small trickle showing

Cloudy, bad-smelling, or bloody urine

Lower abdominal pain

Mild fever - chills

Feeling well

Upper urinary tract infection (pyelonephritis): Symptoms develop quickly and
may or may not include the symptoms for a lower urinary tract infection.

Fairly high fever

Shaking chills

Nausea

Vomiting

Bogey I am not in a position to say what I believe it is you have, but taking into account your symptoms then only one of the above infections stands out.
Go back to your GP because both conditions are treatable and curable and nothing to be scared about or ashamed over because they are both common problems.
Please let me know how you get on Bogey I would love to know
Keep well
Kacy

I am 19 and I have had a serious boyfriend for like 6 months. we have a very sexual relationship and he is sometimes rough but not too bad. Recently was rough during oral though. It has been hot latley and ive been outside alot. ive sweated alot down there and plus went to a nasty lake and swam in it. i was wearing regular panties and jeans. And undressed like an idiot and my bf was touching/playing with everything. We tried to have sex but positions were off but could have pushed lake water in. after swimming all day i had to stay in those clothes for a few hours. There was itching and stuff the night of and the day after that. We had no money to go get yeast infection medication at the time so i was just using a very light amount of anti-itch cream around the outside but not near the actual vagina opening. A couple days before i noticed what looked like a pimple on the outer lip and tried to squeeze it but nothing. i had irritated it though. back to a couple days after swimming; it started to burn when i had to pee and was cloudy but it still itched like crazy. and of coarse being an idiot, i scratched. i started have a discharge that smelled. we got the cream for yeast infection about 4 or 5 days ago and i started using it. it got to where it started swelling and a couple painful bumps apeared on different areas of my labia. it burns really bad when i use the bathroom and i have the UTI symtoms now plus the extremely painful bumps and swelling of the whole area. Oh and that irritated pimple like thing kinda turned into what looked like an open sore so i put a little triple antibiotic ointment on it. Could i have mistaken the yeast infection for a UTI in the first place? could the three chemicals have put blister like bumps there from burning the sensitive skin? And treating it wrong? I have been afraid to go to the doctor because i was scared for them to tell me i had some kind of disease. i Was even scared to tell my bf whom i am with 24-7. i finally told him today because i got on here and looked at all kinds of things, and it doesnt match the descriptions or pictures of any disease. I dont have money or a medical card but im probably going to the ER really soon and have them bill me. Out of all the different sites i looked up and forums read the closest thing to my symptoms was a UTI untreated and treated as yeast infection and irritated skin from itching and sweating and not getting enough air. its been like a week or so now and there are several blister like bumps and the pain is unbearable. i cant use the bathroom because it burns so bad but have to often. serious pain when trying to do an activity or even just walk. I was just tyring to see if im right about this and wanted to see what you had to say. Thank you

Hi you are going through the mill. And listening to what you have to say a lot of this may have been self inflicted by squeezing pimples and scratching. You are obviously worried sick and in pain so you really have no choice but to check it out purely because of the dicomfort your having. I am not in a position to say what I think it is but you have been doing all the right research to try and find out.

You mention UTI well it is an infection that can cause much of what you say. You also mention pimples which could have worsened through scratching, and when we talk of dirty swamp water so as to speak then this is not good because, if there had been a tiny tear in genital skin then dirty water may have entered, however I believe it to be something other than this being the cause of your problem. Have you looked up the symptoms on genital warts.herpes, I am not saying you have this but sites that talk about this matter have some great information for other vaginal issues. - its worth checking these sites out, but it is much more your worth to visit the ER room. Stop worrying and go and get the problem treated so you and your boyfriend can carry on where you left off, only minus sex in the lake and that he takes things easy from now on.

Keep well and come back and let me know how you got on.

Hey Kacy, I have recently started birth control and in the process have developed a vaginal discharge. After having this discharge a wore some tight fitting clothes and now have developed a swollen rash looking thing. I thought after a few days of keeping it clean and dry it would go away but for some reason it has desided to stay. There are no blister but, I noticed a tiny little bump, it is itchy however but there is no burning when using the bathroom. It is very discomforting to touch and sometimes even walk. I have not been sexually active since my last check up. What could this be?

There is not much for me to say on the matter looking at the time lapse of when you sent this SOS because I think you will have sought treatment and cured your problem. Once again a big SORRY and if your not mad with me - I would like to know that you are well.

hey- i am 18 and not yet sexually active.. Recently gone on the contraceptive pill- marvelon as i'm soon ready to lose my virginity with my boyfriend. (ive just started at unii) and for a few days our shower broke and i didn't get to wash for a few days...and after i got a slight rash around my vagina area.. When i came off the pill for my period it started to go down a little and didnt look to inflamed...maybe because i was being very hygenic and washing a lot more as it was the time of the month. But it still hasnt really gone...had it for maybe 3 weeks now, and i'm worried if its a reaction to the pill?? Ive researcched online about rashes and the pill...and theres nothing at all, so i hope it isn't because i have no other complications with this pill. I dont know what to do. IT looks very much just like a nappy rash type thing, but does itch a little, then when i itch it, it does even more. and this hasnt happened before, so i dont really know?

I am not going to the doctors for this. haha, you can say that i dont need to be scared at all, but no way am i showing my vagina haha,

anyway helppp please?

i do wear tight clothing a lot, so have been wearing just cotton pj bottoms and no knickers at night to air it? helpppp thanks

Hi your adamant your not going to see a doctor but in some cases when a condition gets out of hand people have no choice (just something I thought I would mention). You have given two pointers the pill and not washing the vagina - which both could have contributed.

The vagina has to washed every day and without this you can expect many things to occur aside from rash - like smell. You are doing the right thing by wearing loose clothing and going knickerless - but this is not going to help if you don't wash. If the shower breaks use a dampened flannel in the sink or have a tub of wipes bought from the chemist kept in the bathroom

You have to think of your boyfriend in all this before having sex with a rash, and especially more so because you don't know what the rash is. If you have both decided on a date for sex then you better get to that doctor you don't want see - because at a later date the "TWO" of you might need to see one.

Stop worrying it just seems like vaginal rash and most women get this, however get yourself checked because of the the length of time you have had it. Just because its been there a while doesn't mean to get in a panic - what it means if you are not doing the right things to help cure it then its not going to go away and that means prolonging sex that the two of you don't want to do.

If it is a reaction to the pill then you will have to go back and get it changed and if I may suggest that whoever will be dealing with you, doctor, family planning or other, is that you mentions this.

Keep well

Kacy says come back and let me know how you get on
