So many folks out there run at top speed all day, every day without a moment's pause for 'Self'. I see it all the time. Frazzled, harried people, unable to focus on what's in front of them for all the other things they've yet to do. Whether you have kids or not, working full time or not, retired, etc., seems to make no difference. Always in a rush. Always worrying over things that haven't even transpired. It's a crazy way to live and doesn't do much for one's health either. So, why do people live this way? Why do they refuse to stop, for even just 15 minutes, to take a few moments to just BREATHE?
Given the number of books, tapes, movies, etc., all pointing to the benefits of relaxation and meditation, I don't suppose there's any need to delve too deeply into all that. What I do wish to offer, however, is a simple and inexpensive way to change this insane habit. A lovely little refuge anyone can create with even the smallest of spaces, whether indoors or outdoors. Taking the time to do this will greatly improve your Life, your health and your state of mind. Plus you're likely to be a much nicer person to boot! After all, aren't there enough crabby people on this planet already?! So, here are some suggestions to create such a space for yourself.
The Zen Garden ~
You don't have to have acres of land to create a quiet space outdoors. Even just10 square feet of space will do. It's even better if there's a tree in this space. Trees have the most amazing affect on one's breathing. They provide shade and shelter from the elements. And they're great to look at too! I have a little landing that's about half way down the property, with an orange tree in the center and a lovely wall that encircles about 2/3 of the landing. It's surrounded by pretty grasses (like Fountain Grass and Mexican RedHair) along with a sprinkling of wildflowers. On this landing is my favorite chair, 2 wind chimes (soft and lovely sounds), some candles and a bird feeder. It's in a very quiet spot, with virtually no intrusion from neighboring houses. The view is stunning, mountains and rolling hills that go for miles. It is in this space I find refuge and rejuvenation. It took me all of about 30 minutes to turn it into my very own Zen Space. Total cost: ZERO DOLLARS. I had the chair, wind chimes, bird feeder and candles already. All it really took was some time to clean up and set things in their place. When I was done, I could feel my body relax, even before I sat in my chair. I go there every day, at least once during the work day and then again after dinner. It's amazing what that little space provides. Don't know why it took so long for me to do it, but now that I have I'm thrilled to have it.
The Closet Space ~
Not everyone has an extra room in their home, but most of us DO have closet space. Even in the small confines of such a space, you can create a wonderful little 'cubby' in which to sit, be still and watch a candle burn. Of course, you'll have to remove any clothing so you don't burn the house down, but it's worth the time it takes to find some other place for those clothes. I've helped friends do this in closets as small as 4' x 5'. They swore it would never work, but by the time I was finished, they were completely blown away. You CAN create a very lovely quiet space with that little closet. Candles, a comfy chair and a sign on the door that reads: DO NOT DISTURB (or something of the sort) is all you need. Even pillows will suffice, if you don't have a proper chair for the space. Whatever you have on hand will likely do the job. Be creative!
Tents, Tepees & Other Makeshift Spaces ~
You can buy a tent for as little as $30 nowadays. Especially now, as summer nears it's end, you can find all kinds of super deals on lightweight tents. Tepees, too, are not hard to come by or to make yourself. All it takes is a bit of canvas and some long poles. You can find loads of information to build your own tepee on the internet. The cost is a bit more, but if you're into this sort of thing, it's a fabulous way to create your quiet space. I purchased a very nice 10 x 10 dome tent for under $35. When the weather is foul, I can use this instead of my outdoor space (under that orange tree) and still have the comfort of my 'Zen'. You can also find some pretty awesome deals on Craig's List if you're diligent. I've seen tents for under $10, in good shape and perfectly suitable for this purpose. You don't have to have one that will keep you warm to 20 below. Just something to keep you dry and cozy. When I use mine, I lay an old oriental rug on the floor, pile a bunch of pillows and burn encased candles. It's a most comfortable space and makes me feel like I'm in a cocoon. What better way to relax than in the folds of that kind of space?!
You can use your imagination and come up with all sorts of ways to create a Zen Garden for your Self. It's one of the most rewarding things you can do for YOU. Saying you "don't have time" is just one more excuse for denying yourself what you truly deserve. Besides, we ALL have 24 hours in each day. It's not about HAVING time, it's about MAKING time. Time for you. And once you have, you'll wonder why it ever took so long to do it!
i believe the same way. this was a well written, inspiring article. i have my bedroom made into a cubby with a door, and all my favorite things around me, and then, the same for my computer table, and front porch swing. so, all the places i spend the most time in, are giving me positive energy. i have a lot of crystals and healing stones, etc. thanks for sharing some really good tips.
