It seems that we cannot watch the daily news without hearing about the current state of our economy. Rising food and fuel prices. Mortgage companies failing. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac stocks down.

We are all feeling the pain of paying more and getting less for our dollar.  Many of us are having to make difficult choices at the grocery store, the gas pump and which bills to pay first. The news media voices our pain on a daily basis.

What is not being reported enough is the " foreclosure pet " crisis. As people  face the loss of their home there are many decisions to make. One of those decisions is " What about our pets? " Many of us feel that our pets are not property but members of our families.

Unfortunately, many pets are being abandoned. Shelters are overwhelmed. Some shelters have reported the receiving twice as many animals over the same time last year. Abandonment of pets is illegal in most states. But it continues to happen. Animals left to fend for themselves.

I urge anyone thinking of adding a pet to your family to visit your local Shelter. Do you really have to have a pet with a pedigree? Or is that pedigree just a status symbol?  Adopt an orphan!

If you cannot adopt a pet please consider making a donation to you local shelter or to the ASPCA.

Yes good thought. Many a pet dropped off somewhere alone by owners who can no longer afford them. Do the right thing, take them to a shelter or find a home.

Great article, Debbie. I had heard something about this but didn't realize just how bad the situation had become. A terrible tragedy for both families and their pets.

You are right, the shelters are overwhelmed. The one in our town has a sign out now that reads "half price adoptions".
