The cup represents our lives, our actions, our thoughts, and our beliefs, our inner being. It is God's desire to pour the anointing of the Holy Spirit into us, His children. He wants us filled with His Spirit so that it can lead and guide us in every aspect of our lives. This is the spiritual overflow He has available for us. A continuous flow that will never run dry.
But for our cups to be filled as God desires, we must come before Him with it empty. God is attracted to empty cups, which are His children ready to be filled and do His will. He will not pour more into our cups than what we have the ability to receive. Too many Christians are not receiving the full anointing of the Holy Spirit because their cups are not empty.
God will not fill our cups beyond our ability to receive. If our lives are filled with so much that is contrary to Him and His Word, there is not much room for God to pour His Spirit into it. Pride, selfishness, greed, envy, hate, and sexual immorality are just a few examples of the "junk" that prevents us from receiving the complete filling of God's Spirit. The more "junk" in our cup, the less God can pour into it. Some of us have cups so full of "junk" that the spiritual overflow from God has stopped. This is reflected by our continuous unrighteous behavior.
One of God's purposes for us is to love each other as He loves us. God fulfills this purpose through the working of the Holy Spirit within us. But how can the Spirit work in full power through us if our cups are not empty? Too many Christians are trying to love others with a partially filled cup. Too many of us are 50% Spirit and 50% us, 30% Spirit and 70% us, or even 10% Spirit and 90% us. That percentage that is "us" is the "junk" that is in our cups. Our "junk" contaminates God's people. As we become involved in their lives, we pour our "junk" into them. This is not completely what God desires.
Some time ago there was a TV commercial for Brim Coffee that said, "Fill it to the rim with Brim." That typifies the desire we should have for God to fill our cups to the rim with the anointing of His Spirit. We should want to be totally filled with His Spirit. If this is our desire, we must be willing to empty our cup of the "junk" that is in it. We cannot do this in our own power. We need the power of God through His Spirit to get rid of the "junk" in our cups. Let us invite the Holy Spirit to fill our cups and drive out anything in our lives contrary to God's Word. Let us be prepared to receive all God wants to pour into our cups.
By coming to God with an empty cup, we will receive the full anointing of His Spirit unto our lives. And when He fills our cup so that it overflows, we can then pour the full cup of His Spirit on the saints of God because we will be connected to that well of water springing up to eternal life. A well that will never run dry!
