Jesus makes this promise in John 8:12; " I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life". What is the "light of life"? As we follow Christ, His light illuminates our lives and lights our paths so that we are never in spiritual darkness. The light of Christ dwells within us and helps to give us spiritual sight for our daily walk in life.

When you walk into a dark room and turn on the light switch, the light reveals everything that is in the room. The "light of Christ" has the same effect. Where Christ has entered completely, there can be no darkness for His light pushes it out.

But if we walk according to our flesh, we are walking in spiritual darkness. We are disconnected from Christ and from the "light of life" He gives to those who follow Him. This is one reason for the weakness of the Christian faith in today's society. There are too many Christians who do not want to make a commitment to let Christ be the all and all in their lives. They refuse to walk in the "light of Christ". They choose to cover the light, to hide it, or switch it off to follow their flesh. They prefer to live in spiritual darkness than to follow the path of light.

However, Jesus is standing at the door knocking. He wants to be let in so He can light up our lives spiritually. He wants to be let in to light up our paths, to direct us to safety. Jesus knows without His light we walk in spiritual darkness and cannot see the danger that lies ahead of us. In spiritual darkness we cannot see the traps and snares set by our adversary, the devil. We are unprepared for the spiritual warfare that awaits us each day.

As children of God, we must not forget our heritage. 1 Peter 2:9 exhorts us to not forget we are a chosen people who God has called out of darkness into His wonderful light through Jesus. God didn't give us the "light of Christ" for us to hide it or turn it off. He gave us the "light of Christ" for us to walk in daily.

The story of the 10 young virgins with their lamps is in Mathew 25: 1 12. When the bridegroom came at midnight, 5 of the virgins were prepared and had oil for their lamps to burn with light. However, the other 5 had let their lamps go out and had no oil to light them. When they went to get oil for their lamps to have light, they missed the bridegroom and were shut out of the wedding feast. The story calls the former virgins wise or prudent, while the latter 5 were called foolish.

We should learn from the five wise virgins and allow the "light of life" to shine in us. Our time here on earth is limited. God has given us work to do. Therefore, we should let out light shine all the time. We should not be like the 5 foolish virgins. By letting their light fade they were not ready. They were not prepared for the bridegrooms coming. They were in darkness and were left out.

Jesus, "the light of the world" is knocking. Allow Him to come in and give you the "light of life". It will spiritually illuminate you inside and give light to your path each day

Beautifully written article, Oscar. Our last Sunday School lesson just happened to be about 'walking in the light' versus ,walking in the darkness' of sin. As children we are afraid of the dark--as adults we should be very afraid of the 'darkness' that is living without Christ.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us.

Sandra
