Decorating dorm rooms is something that requires patience and thought. The space is limited and you will need to make the most of it as this tiny room is going to be your home for some time. You are going to need storage space for books, room for family photos and trinkets that make you feel at home and a place where you can work comfortably. You also want to keep track of your classes, tests and appointments.

You must first decide on the style that you would like for the dorm room. Determining the feel of the room comes before you begin to be concerned with the color scheme and the dcor to use in the room. Determine if you want a casual feel or a more structured feel when decorating the room.

The way the room looks when you finally bring it together is the ultimate goal. Visualizing each item in the dorm room along with other pieces of furniture and dcor will help you get an idea of the overall look. This will make purchasing decisions easier as long as you are able to remember the actual layout of the room.

Be sure that you are fully aware of the space available to you when decorating a dorm room. Knowing the dimensions of the dorm room and comparing them with a similar room in your present home will give you a feel for the space with which you have to work.

You don't want to clutter your space. Metal furniture will appear to be smaller than wooden. You want to go with furniture designs that allow for more than one type of use because of the reduced space available. You may be sharing the dorm room so you might want to consider leaving space for socializing.

When choosing furniture, ask yourself if it can be used for storage as well. Benches, ottomans and even end tables can be used for storage. If you need a tiny table by the bed and if there is room, you can find an end table with doors on it for storing items and use the top for a small lamp and photographs.

The windowsills along with the top of furniture can be used to display personal effects. Pictures and small trinkets can make you feel more at home. Now that you know where to start you just have to remember to consult the schools guidelines and your roommate before you begin.
