I would hazard a guess that we have all grown up sitting starry eyed and open mouthed at the feet of some story teller in our lives that taught us the age-old phrase ‘Happily Ever-After' as the book is closed. Now that we're grown and reality sets in, one ponders the synopsis of the existence of such a phenomenon. Judge Judy asked this question on her television program (mostly televised divorces) this morning-"Happily Ever-After-Do you Believe?" I couldn't help but wonder just how many people believe this fairy-tale plot.
But then I think; why should this be considered strictly the stuff of fairy-tales? Could it not exist in true life? Could some people actually be living examples of true-to-life happily ever-afters? If we look at this question as it relates to love and marriage-which is usually the stuff that fairy tales are made of-then, I would have to say, yes I believe. I believe that there are many more cases of lasting love and happiness than we realize. I don't know of any polls taken to determine the number of ‘one-time' marriages and whether or not they were ‘happy' marriages. There could be long lasting marriages that were ‘not-necessarily-happily' but are ‘ever-after' marriages.
Happily ever after could also mean not a first time marriage-it could be a third, fourth, or even a fifth. The ‘Happily Ever-After' doesn't have a set beginning and isn't over ‘til it's over; and ever after could be a very long time. Then we rely on faith that our new ‘Happily Ever-After' begins. And I think again, yes, I could believe that a person could find that one lasting happiness.
There could also be considered a happily ever after in the form of close friendships. Have you ever had a falling out with a dear friend? It happens, and I'm sure most of us have gone through it at one time or another. When you made up, possibly your friendship became stronger and even though life's circumstances created a drifting apart, the friendship held. Then when you meet that one special friend forty or fifty years later and reminisce about old times picking up where you left off as though the span of time had never come between you-yes, I believe.
This brings up the query of a religious-based ‘Happily Ever-After'. If we have faith and trust in Jesus Christ to receive us into the Promised Land will we recognize our beloved husbands, wives, and other family members? Will this be a continuation of our happily ever after? As we stand in church and sing the songs, ‘…I want to meet Mother and Saints of yore in Heaven the home of the soul….', I can truly believe there is this one greatest ‘Happily Ever-After' that one can achieve.
