How to Learn to Ribbon Embroider in 3 Easy Steps: A Guide to Silk Ribbon Embroidery

Ribbon embroidery is a method of embroidery that uses silk ribbon and embroidery floss to create exquisite handwork. It is so very simple to do that a novice embroiderer can use the basic simple stitches to fashion some lovely work. It is not hard to get started. All you need are some visual aides, supplies and some precautions.

Step #1: The Teacher

The best teacher for learning this method of soft romantic embroidery is visual aids. You want to look for books, which include clear illustrations. this is a great book to start with. Beginner's Guide to Silk Ribbon Embroidery (Beginner's Guide to) . As well, there are countless pattern books that have instructions on how to do ribbon embroidery. Amazon books, or any other online book store are a great source. In addition, there are also many other websites that offer videos or still-life examples of various stitches and patterns.Using these "teachers" are so much easier than trying to understand written instructions.

Step #2: Supplies

After you have found your pattern , then it is time to purchase or gather the supplies for your silk ribbon embroidery project. As any pattern, each has as specific list requirement. If you want to duplicate that pattern then it is important to follow their recommended guidelines. Here are some common supplies that you will need for any project:

Silk ribbon: 2 mm, 4 mm or 7 mm embroidery ribbon of different colors depending of your design needs or pattern specifications.

Chenille needle with a large eye. Chenille needles are recommended for their large eye and sharp tip. It is a good idea to purchase several needles. It is fair easier to have several needles threaded with the different colors you need for you project, than have to thread the same needle over and over again.

Linen or any fabric or piece of clothing that you desire.

Scissors: Should be small and sharp.

Embroidery floss.

Tracing paper: For tracing your pattern onto the fabric.

Pencil.

Embroidery hoop: There are many sizes available depending on the size of the project.

Step #3: Precaution

Silk Ribbon can bleed when you wash it. This is not always the case, but it is better to be safe than sorry. There is nothing worse than spending hours of work making your project to have it ruined the first time you use it. So follow the instructions for pre-washing your silk ribbon carefully. Pre-washing will ensure that your project can be washed in the machine and will last for years with the proper care.

Embroidery is a hobby for anyone. I have known men who are very accomplished at this craft. Silk ribbon embroidery is on method of embroidery that quick and unique, giving you a great sense of accomplishment. It is also a method that allows for creativity; that is, it is very forgiving. Make a mistake, it is easy to fix, and the results will be beautiful and uniquely yours. Remember though, to follow these 3 easy steps in getting started and you will have a successful start to your endeavor.
